      Google has launched Nuvem, a new transatlantic subsea cable that spans the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and the United States, further solidifying its control over the physical infrastructure that supports its cloud and AI services.

      The cable connects Sines on Portugal’s southwest coast to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, placing Google among a select group of hyperscalers that construct and own their own undersea cables instead of renting capacity from other providers. The importance of the cable’s route is matched by its hardware. Named Nuvem, which translates to "cloud" in Portuguese, the cable features branches to Bermuda and São Miguel in the Azores, offering Google a diverse pathway across a body of water that already facilitates the majority of intercontinental data traffic.

      The company positions this development as a means to support the same AI and cloud workloads that are currently transforming its data center approach. The technical specifications are impressive; according to Google Cloud and information from Submarine Networks, Nuvem consists of 16 fiber pairs, each capable of approximately 24 terabits per second, resulting in a total design capacity of around 384 Tbps along a trunk measuring nearly 6,900 km.

      SubCom, a marine-systems provider in New Jersey, constructed and installed the cable, which Google owns and oversees through its subsidiary Starfish Infrastructure. The Myrtle Beach connection was completed in May 2026 at a station run by DC Blox, with the entire system expected to be operational by the second half of the year.

      Nuvem works in conjunction with Firmina, which connected to South Carolina in 2023, and Equiano, linking Portugal to West Africa. Together, these cables create a network of company-owned routes that Google can rely on if one line encounters an issue. Myrtle Beach now accommodates several such cables, including Meta’s Anjana cable, transforming a section of the Carolina coast into a busy transatlantic landing area. Bermuda also benefits from its first transatlantic fiber route through this setup, a development local officials see as a way to establish the island as a mid-ocean transit hub.

      For Google, the branch adds further redundancy: in the event of a problem on the main trunk, traffic can be rerouted instead of relying on competing carriers, which embodies the kind of resilience that motivated the project. The main driver of this initiative is capacity. The training and servicing of large AI models require vast amounts of data transfer between regions, and the increasing demand for AI data center capabilities has led hyperscalers to quickly secure bandwidth that they can fully control.

      By owning the fiber rather than renting it, Google gains both cost and strategic advantages, protecting its network from third-party outages and price fluctuations. This also allows the company to align cable capacity with its own expansion schedules without depending on consortium partners to agree on shared routes.

      This approach is not new for Google, which has been building its own capacity for a decade, including a 26 Tbps cable across Asia in 2016, as well as the Grace Hopper and Firmina systems in the Atlantic. Nuvem’s 384 Tbps capacity illustrates how significantly per-cable capacity has increased as the number of fiber pairs and the throughput of each pair have risen.

      Portugal emerges as a notable winner in this development. Sines has endeavored for years to establish itself as a connectivity hub between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, and the establishment of a Google-built landing station there enhances this role. The Azores branch, which arrives at Lagoa on São Miguel, adds a mid-Atlantic waypoint that Google intends to share with its upcoming Sol cable, a separate initiative that will connect to Spain and Florida and should not be confused with Nuvem due to overlapping regions.

      The next step is the large-scale activation of the cable. Successfully landing a cable is one significant achievement, but lighting up all 16 pairs and integrating the route into Google’s global infrastructure is another. The company has indicated that the system should be operational and handling live traffic before the year concludes. For a business heavily investing in cloud and AI, another 384 Tbps under the Atlantic serves as a foundational enhancement rather than just a headline feature.
