Spotify's latest conversational AI is capable of playing requested tracks and responding to your music-related inquiries.
Spotify is introducing a new AI-driven conversational feature that allows Premium users to communicate directly with the app regarding their music preferences. Users can input their requests either by typing or speaking, and follow-up questions can be used to refine the search rather than manually looking for a song, podcast, or audiobook.
This feature can be accessed from Spotify’s Home and Now Playing screens and functions similarly to a personal audio assistant. It can select tracks, answer queries about the current song or album, suggest new music, and sift through your listening history to offer tailored responses.

What can you ask Spotify to do?
You can request Spotify to play new artists you haven't heard before. Follow-up prompts can specify a certain artist, concentrate on recent releases, or request more upbeat tunes. The assistant can also save songs, add them to your queue, or follow an artist. Additionally, it can provide detailed information about whatever is currently playing. Users can inquire about an album's release date, a song's genre, or the inspiration behind a particular record.

The feature is also applicable to podcasts and audiobooks. You can ask Spotify to locate more books by a specific author or find other podcast episodes featuring the same guest. It can also review your listening history. Spotify claims you will be able to ask when you first played a certain song or which genres you've recently listened to the most.
This is not Spotify’s inaugural AI-based feature
Spotify has been incorporating AI for an extended period, with each feature introducing the technology to various aspects of the service. One such function is the AI DJ, which curates a personalized music stream and uses an AI-generated voice to introduce songs and clarify recommendations. Another feature, AI Playlist, allows users to create playlists based on written prompts centered around mood, activity, or genre.
Studio by Spotify Labs can create personalized podcasts and daily updates based on a user’s listening behavior. Additionally, Spotify has revealed a separate generative AI tool that will enable Premium subscribers to produce licensed covers and remixes from songs by participating artists and songwriters.
The new conversational feature is currently being launched in beta for Premium users aged 18 and over in the US, Ireland, and Sweden. It is available in English through Spotify’s iOS and Android applications. Spotify notes that responses may not always be flawless during the testing phase.
