How Claude assisted my 65-year-old father in finally moving away from his handwritten ledgers.
My father has operated a small business for as long as I can remember, and he's maintained his financial records the traditional way throughout that time. He writes down every sale by hand to prepare for tax season later. The issue arises because his accountant requires this information in Excel, and my dad, who isn’t familiar with computers, has never learned how to use the software.
For years, his solution has been to pay someone to type his handwritten notes into a spreadsheet manually. While this approach worked, it added unnecessary expenses to his business, which he wished to avoid but couldn’t.
What motivated me to start this project
Last week, while visiting home, I saw my dad bent over his notebook, once again writing out another day’s sales by hand. I attempted to teach him some basic functions in Excel, and to his credit, he quickly grasped the basics. However, the data entry was still consuming hours of his time.

Typing out extensive lists of numbers isn't something that comes easily, especially for someone who didn't grow up with computers. That's when I considered using Claude to completely eliminate the manual workload.
Transforming handwritten receipts into a spreadsheet
I got to work and created a simple Claude project, instructing it to convert my dad’s handwritten receipts into properly formatted Excel data. To illustrate my needs, I created a sample spreadsheet, filling in the first few rows myself. I then uploaded the sample along with photos of his handwritten bills.

Claude completed the remainder of the spreadsheet. The data that would have taken my dad hours to type only took minutes. While Claude did make occasional errors, all my dad had to do was verify the information, which is much easier than entering hundreds of rows manually.

The best part is that Claude projects retain the configuration. Now, my dad simply needs to open the project, start a new chat, upload his spreadsheet and handwritten bills, and Claude manages the data entry from there. No formulas to memorize, no formatting to sort out, and no additional costs.
Is this worth the broader implications of AI?
I’m not an advocate who believes AI is unequivocally beneficial. The substantial resources consumed by data centers and the rising prices of consumer electronics are hard to overlook. I don’t think the advantages we gain necessarily compensate for what we lose.

But then I look at my dad. At 65, he has never felt comfortable with computers and always thought tools like Excel were beyond his capabilities. Now, with a setup that took me just an afternoon to create, he’s utilizing AI to manage a part of his business that used to drain his time and finances weekly.
I don't believe this mitigates the broader concerns regarding AI. However, it’s difficult to ignore the impact it has had on someone who never expected this type of technology to be accessible to him. The joy I witnessed on his face when he completed his first Excel sheet is a moment I will always cherish. For at least that one instance, the trade-offs felt justified.
