How Claude assisted my 65-year-old father in finally moving on from his handwritten ledgers.
My father has run a small business for as long as I can remember, and he's maintained his records the traditional way throughout that time. He manually writes down each sale so he can prepare his taxes later. The issue is that his accountant requires this information in Excel, and since my dad grew up in a time before computers, he has never learned how to use it.
For many years, he managed this by hiring someone to transcribe his handwritten notes into a spreadsheet. While it worked, it added extra costs to his business, something he wanted to avoid but couldn't escape.
What motivated me to start this project
Last week, when I visited home, I found my dad bent over his notebook, writing out yet another day's sales by hand. I attempted to teach him some Excel basics, and to his credit, he quickly grasped the concepts. However, the data entry process was still consuming hours of his time.

Typing out numerous rows of numbers isn't something one learns in a day, especially if they haven't been around computers. That’s when I considered using Claude to completely eliminate the manual work.
Converting handwritten invoices into a spreadsheet
I got started on the project. I set up a straightforward Claude project, instructing it to convert my dad's handwritten bills into well-organized Excel data. To demonstrate, I created a sample spreadsheet and completed the first few rows myself. Then I uploaded the sample sheet along with images of his handwritten invoices.

Claude managed to fill in the remainder of the spreadsheet. The data that would have taken my dad hours to input manually was done in just minutes. While Claude occasionally made errors, all my dad needed to do was cross-reference the data, which is much easier than entering hundreds of rows by hand.

The best part is that Claude projects retain the initial setup. Now, all my dad has to do is open the project, start a new chat, upload his spreadsheet and handwritten bills, and Claude takes care of the data entry from that point on. There are no formulas to memorize, no formatting to sort out, and no additional costs.
Is this worth the broader implications of AI?
I'm not someone who believes AI is unconditionally beneficial. The natural resources consumed by data centers and the rising prices of consumer electronics are hard to overlook. I don't think the advantages we gain always justify what we sacrifice.

Yet, when I look at my dad, I see a 65-year-old who has never felt at ease with computers and always thought that tools like Excel were beyond his abilities. Now, with a setup that took me just an afternoon to develop, he is using AI to manage a part of his business that previously cost him significant time and money each week.
I don't believe this negates the larger concerns surrounding AI. However, it's difficult to ignore the positive change it has brought to someone who never imagined technology like this would be accessible to him. The joy I witnessed on his face when he finished his first Excel sheet is a memory I will cherish. In that moment, at least, the trade-offs seemed worthwhile.
