WhatsApp is finally introducing usernames, so make sure to claim yours now.

Three billion users, each with one good username, and reservations have just opened.

If you’ve been hesitant to give out your personal number just to start a chat on WhatsApp, the platform has an update that will put you at ease, similar to a feature Signal has had for two years.

WhatsApp has confirmed the introduction of usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. However, with three billion users on the app, you'll need to act quickly to secure your desired username before someone else does.

Your phone number is private, and there are times you might want to connect without sharing it. That's why we're introducing usernames for WhatsApp. Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch the feature. It only takes a few seconds, so be sure to act fast! — WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) June 29, 2026

      So, what’s actually taking place?

Beginning this week, WhatsApp will allow you to reserve a username for your account (between 3 to 35 characters).

The goal is to enable you to share a handle instead of your phone number when connecting with someone, be it a classmate, neighbor, or a new acquaintance. If you're not entirely comfortable sharing your number, you can provide your username instead.

It’s important to note that the feature will officially launch later this year. After it goes live and you activate it for your account, first-time messengers won’t see your phone number.

Additionally, there won’t be any public directory or suggestion system, meaning your username won’t randomly appear to strangers. Individuals will need to know your exact username in order to find you.

What else is WhatsApp doing to safeguard your privacy with usernames?

WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key, which adds another layer of security by requiring that someone possess this key along with your username to reach out to you.

Creators, small businesses, and brands can also claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames on WhatsApp, which helps maintain consistency across platforms, reinforcing the importance of reserving your username as soon as possible.

Reserving your username only takes a few seconds. Simply navigate to Settings, then Account, then Username. The complete rollout will occur gradually by region, with WhatsApp notifying you when usernames are available in your area.

I tested a hidden video feature in iOS 27, and it greatly reduced my frustration.

Better quality, smaller file size, and no status bar—iOS 27's video frame feature outperforms screenshots in every aspect.

If you’ve ever been on vacation and opted to capture video instead of photos, thinking you’d pause to take screenshots later, you may have later regretted that choice.

The process can be cumbersome, as it involves several steps: searching for the right frame, pausing, and taking a screenshot. If the screenshot doesn’t turn out well, you rewind the video, pause again, and try for another screenshot. You see the issue here?

This leak encompasses more than just a few unclear images.

The 2027 iPhone release schedule is set to become considerably busier. A new leak suggests that Apple has six new iPhone models scheduled for the year, and if most of the information holds true, we may be looking at the most extensive iPhone roadmap in years.
