WhatsApp is finally introducing usernames, so be sure to claim yours as soon as possible.

Three billion users, each with a unique username, and reservations have just begun.

If you've hesitated to share your personal number for starting a conversation on WhatsApp, the platform has an update that might make you feel much more at ease—similar to a feature that Signal has had for two years.

WhatsApp has officially introduced usernames, allowing users to connect without needing a phone number. However, since this feature will be available to three billion users, it’s important to secure your desired username quickly before someone else takes it.

Your phone number is private, and there are times when you want to connect without sharing it. That's why we’re rolling out usernames for WhatsApp. Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use when we launch the feature later this year. It only takes a few seconds, so be sure to act fast—WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) June 29, 2026.

      What exactly is happening?

Beginning this week, WhatsApp will allow you to reserve a username for your account (between 3 to 35 characters).

This system enables you to share a handle instead of your phone number when connecting with others, whether that’s with a classmate, neighbor, or someone you just met. If you're hesitant to share your phone number, you can provide your username instead.

It's important to note that while the feature will be active this week, it will officially go live later this year. After it’s launched and enabled for your account, individuals messaging you for the first time won’t see your phone number.

Additionally, there is no public directory or suggestion system, so your username won’t randomly appear to strangers. People will need to know your exact username to locate you.

What other privacy measures is WhatsApp implementing with usernames?

WhatsApp is also integrating an optional username key, which adds another layer of security requiring someone to possess both your username and the key to send you a message.

Creators, small businesses, and brands will also have the option to claim their existing usernames from Instagram or Facebook on WhatsApp, ensuring consistency across platforms, which is why you should reserve yours as soon as possible.

Reserving your username takes only a few seconds; just navigate to Settings, then Account, and then Username. The full rollout will be phased, region by region, and WhatsApp will inform you when usernames are available in your area.

I tried a hidden video feature in iOS 27, and it saved me a lot of hassle.

With improved quality, smaller file sizes, and no status bar, iOS 27’s video frame feature surpasses screenshots in every aspect.

If you've ever been on holiday and opted to record video rather than taking photographs, intending to pause and screenshot later, you may have questioned that choice afterward. The process can be tedious, involving several steps—finding the right frame, pausing, and capturing a screenshot. If the first attempt doesn’t look good, you may have to return to the video, pause again, and try another screenshot. You can see where this leads.
