The iPhone 18 may receive a slight increase in RAM, but it will only be a small amount intended for handling AI tasks in iOS 27.

A recent report indicates that the additional memory in Apple's upcoming devices is intended to ensure the smooth operation of Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone may not see a significant RAM upgrade, but it is likely to get just enough extra memory to support its expanding AI initiatives seamlessly. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities, both the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are anticipated to increase from 8GB to 9GB of RAM, mainly to facilitate deeper integration of Apple Intelligence within iOS 27.

Sufficient RAM to satisfy Apple Intelligence

In a post on X, Kuo mentioned that the latest supply chain investigations show the A20-equipped iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to have 9GB of RAM, an increase from the 8GB in the current A19 models. This extra gigabyte isn’t expected to enable new AI features by itself, but it will help the devices manage multiple Apple Intelligence tasks more effectively as iOS 27 enhances system-level AI integration.

Kuo stated, "iOS 27 will provide more in-depth system-level integration with Apple Intelligence. My current industry assessments suggest that the standard iPhones for the first half of 2027, powered by the A20 chip, will transition to 9GB DRAM (1.5GB × 6 dies), up from 8GB (2GB × 4 dies) in the existing A19 models, to maintain system performance."

Kuo also noted that the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the anticipated foldable iPhone with the A20 Pro chip will continue to be equipped with 12GB of RAM, indicating that Apple believes this amount is adequate for its top-tier AI tasks. This suggests that the memory upgrade targets bringing the standard models closer to the AI capabilities of the Pro series rather than pushing the flagship devices further ahead.

A single gigabyte can significantly impact performance

While moving from 8GB to 9GB may not sound particularly thrilling on the surface, considering many flagship Android phones now feature 16GB or even 24GB of RAM, Apple has rarely pursued higher memory figures merely for promotional purposes. Instead, the company typically incorporates just enough RAM to facilitate new software functionalities, relying on seamless hardware and software integration to handle the remainder.

If Kuo’s forecast is accurate, the additional memory is less about speeding up the iPhone 18 and more about ensuring that Apple Intelligence operates efficiently. As iOS 27 is anticipated to integrate AI more thoroughly into the operating system, background models and on-device processing will likely require more resources. A moderate increase in RAM could assist the base iPhone in keeping pace without compelling users to upgrade to a Pro model. Although it may not be the most striking upgrade on paper, it could turn out to be one of the most crucial enhancements for Apple's forthcoming AI features.
