For many years, brands have been making media placement choices based on factors such as a publication's domain authority, readership statistics, and general recognition. However, none of these metrics assess how frequently a publication appears when someone queries an AI engine for recommendations.

The Baden Bower AI Visibility Index 2026 was created to address this gap. The study processed 20 buyer-intent inquiries through six different AI engines, performing ten iterations for each question and recording every source cited in the responses.

The six platforms examined were ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot. Across 1,200 observations, the methodology documented a total of 12,040 individual citations. Each citation was evaluated and linked to its original publication, resulting in a ranked index that shows which outlets AI engines quote when buyers are making decisions.

The methodology aimed to represent the entire AI search landscape rather than focusing on just one platform. Because citation behaviors differ among engines, every publication received a score based on its average performance across all six, leading to rankings that are stable enough for cross-category comparisons.

      Who Leads in AI Responses

Forbes took the top position, achieving a score of 92 out of 100 on the index’s AIO Citation Score. This score is a numerical index rather than a percentage: the raw citation share of each publication across all six engines is normalized so that the highest-ranked source scores 92, facilitating easier comparisons of distance between any two publications. Forbes's underlying citation share accounted for 13.8 percent of all logged citations, approximately one-third higher than the 10.5 percent recorded by the second-ranked publication, Business Insider.

The distinction between first and second place is significant. TechCrunch placed next with a score of 53.5, followed by Bloomberg at 48.9 and Wikipedia at 48.4. Entrepreneur scored 40.7, Inc. at 35.4, Fast Company at 34.3, and Reddit at 33.2.

A surprising finding for many media strategists is at the tenth rank. Yahoo Finance, one of the most extensively distributed financial news platforms globally, received a score of just 28.8, ranking it lower than seven editorial outlets, Wikipedia, and the community platform Reddit, which scored 33.2. This indicates that distribution scale does not necessarily equate to frequency of AI citations. The engines seem to prioritize content type and editorial origin more than just reach.

The top ten is predominantly comprised of editorial sources, which are publications where stories are written, edited, and placed through journalistic connections, rather than being disseminated via press release services. Seven of the ten top-ranked sources are editorial outlets. The three that are exceptions include Wikipedia and Reddit, which feature a mix of content types, and Yahoo Finance, which primarily serves as a distribution platform.

"While distribution puts a brand in front of readers, it doesn’t guarantee its presence in AI answers," stated AJ Ignacio, CEO of Baden Bower. "The engines judge credibility differently. This index reveals which sources meet that credibility test and which do not, independent of their circulation."

Three Trends That Characterize AI Citation Behavior

The index reveals three consistent structural trends across all six engines and different query types tested.

The first is the editorial advantage. Authored editorial coverage, which results from editorial relationships instead of wire-distributed coverage, was cited 2.3 times more frequently than coverage sent through wire services for the same brands. Wire services, such as AP News, Reuters, and PR Newswire, did appear in AI responses but at much lower rates. PR Newswire, for example, received a score of 12.5, the third lowest in the study. This suggests that the way coverage is produced and distributed influences AI visibility, regardless of which publication carries it.

The second trend involves publication tiers. Flagship editions carry the heaviest citation weight: Forbes's flagship scored 92, while its country editions posted a score of 17. Both types appeared in results from all six engines, with country editions still outscoring press release wires like PR Newswire. The data suggests a tiered approach rather than a singular one: flagship placements consolidate a brand’s AI visibility, while edition-level editorial coverage expands it, and wire distribution alone offers the least visibility.

The third trend is recency. Coverage published in the last 12 months was cited 2.9 times more often than older content from the same companies. This trend was consistent across all content types and all tested engines. Historical coverage from the same publication, even if it performed well when published, contributes significantly less to current AI visibility than recent placements do.

      The Unexpected High Performers

Two sources in the index exceeded expectations markedly. Wikipedia ranked fifth overall at 48.4, ahead of Entrepreneur, Inc., Fast Company, and all wire services in the study. Reddit ranked ninth at 33.2, surpassing Yahoo Finance
