With the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 just a few months away, Rockstar Games is encouraging long-time players of Grand Theft Auto 5 to revisit Los Santos. The company has announced that those who own the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 will receive a complimentary upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.
This initiative comes as Rockstar builds anticipation for GTA 6, which is set to be released on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. In the past, upgrading from older console versions to the current-generation editions required a separate purchase, usually costing around $10. Starting Thursday, however, eligible players can transition to the newer version at no extra charge.
PC players will also benefit from an upgrade. Rockstar is permitting users to shift from the older Legacy version of GTA 5 to the newer Enhanced edition, which features several graphical and technical improvements.
The upgrade introduces ray tracing support, quicker loading times through SSD optimization, enhanced audio features, DualSense controller support, and other upgrades designed to leverage modern gaming technology.
Rockstar introduces new content along with technical enhancements
The free upgrade is more than just a visual enhancement. Players who transition to the latest version will gain access to features that were not previously available in earlier versions of the game. One of the key additions is Hao’s Special Works (HSW), a customization system that permits specific vehicles to receive performance enhancements and improved tuning options.
The update also features Career Progress tracking, additional rewards, and various quality-of-life improvements designed for both veteran and returning GTA Online players. Rockstar has released a migration guide to assist players in transferring their Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress between versions, ensuring they can continue their current adventures without having to start anew.
For those who have dedicated years to developing characters, businesses, and collections in GTA Online, a smooth migration is likely to be a critical aspect of the upgrade.
GTA Online continues to be a major profit source for Rockstar
The timing of the free upgrade seems intentional. Despite its release in 2013, GTA 5 remains one of the most successful games ever developed. Its online component continues to be significantly lucrative for Rockstar, generating income through Shark Cards and other in-game purchases.
Recent leaked financial data indicated that GTA Online was reportedly making over $1 million per day between September 2025 and April 2026. This level of player engagement illustrates why Rockstar remains committed to keeping the game relevant nearly 13 years post-launch.
The free upgrade might also serve an additional purpose. Many fans suspect that Rockstar aims to have as many players as possible on the latest version of GTA Online prior to the release of GTA 6. Some have theorized that progress, rewards, or online features could eventually transition into Rockstar’s next-generation online experience.
For the moment, Rockstar is concentrating on providing current players with a smoother, more visually appealing version of GTA 5 as they await the company's most significant release to date. After over a decade in the market, GTA 5 is proving once again that it still has considerable vitality before GTA 6 ultimately takes the spotlight.
