Comand AI secures €32M for its military command software powered by AI.
The competition in the defence technology sector has expanded to a new area that goes beyond the drones and sensors typically highlighted in the news. Comand AI, a startup based in Paris that develops AI software for military command, has successfully secured €32 million in Series A funding, led by Blossom Capital, with a strategic investment from Sweden’s Saab and continued support from Expeditions. This funding round was announced during Eurosatory, one of the largest defence exhibitions globally.
The company's focus is on what the industry refers to as C2, or command and control, which is the software that integrates with sensors, drones, and weaponry to transform a vast amount of data into actionable decisions. Its platform, Prevail, is centered around a concept they call a “digital command staff,” comprised of specialized AI agents that manage various tasks such as mission analysis and after-action review.
In the words of founder Loïc Mougeolle, the vision is: “We are transitioning from a battlefield driven by words to one governed by mathematics.” Through Prevail, the company asserts that a standard laptop can serve as a command center capable of coordinating both manned units and drone swarms, while human operators retain final decision-making authority.
Addressing the void left by larger competitors, the landscape is highly competitive and financially robust. For instance, Helsing, the German defence AI firm, is valued at $18 billion, while Anduril recently completed funding with a valuation of $61 billion. Although both operate in similar sectors, neither is concentrating solely on the command layer.
This is the specific niche that Comand AI aims to fill, and it possesses an advantage that larger companies lack: Prevail has been implemented with operational units in France, Germany, Ukraine, and other allied nations in the past year, providing it with real battlefield insights at the decision-making level. The company has not disclosed how extensive these deployments are.
Despite the crowded landscape, with competitors like Anduril’s Lattice, Palantir’s Maven, Helsing’s Altra, and Shield AI’s Commander all eyeing the same goal, a €32 million funding round is relatively modest compared to these names.
The involvement of Saab represents more than just financial support; it suggests a strategic alliance. Instead of creating its own command software, the Swedish defense company is choosing to support a startup in this venture.
Together, they will work on developing new software for GlobalEye, Saab’s airborne early-warning aircraft, and on creating a next-generation C2 ecosystem with Prevail as part of the integration. This partnership combines Swedish defense equipment with French AI, forming a distinctly European collaboration.
This positioning is significant considering that Europe’s most notable C2 deployment comes from an American company. NATO has implemented Palantir’s Maven, and officials have acknowledged the absence of a domestic option, even as Palantir’s reputation in Europe begins to falter. Comand AI, in collaboration with Saab, is positioning itself as that domestic alternative.
The funding will enable Prevail to expand into NATO markets and explore new domains, with air capabilities already in progress and maritime applications expected before the end of the year. The next three years will be critical and high-stakes, as the question of who will ultimately control the decision-making layer in defence AI comes to the forefront.
