Portable monitors have become versatile tools in modern technology. They accompany remote workers, enhance limited laptop displays, and occasionally serve as gaming screens in hotel rooms. Most of these monitors adhere to a consistent formula: a basic Full HD screen, a foldable cover, and a price tag comfortably under $250. Ugreen, however, has chosen to deviate from this blueprint.
The company’s new AP16 portable monitor has officially arrived in the U.S., featuring a list of specifications that resembles those of a high-end desktop monitor rather than an item meant for easy transport. The downside is its price of $350, which places it above many competitors.
For those who pay attention to every pixel
The first distinguishing feature of the AP16 is its display. While many portable monitors still opt for a 1080p panel, Ugreen has chosen a sharper 2560 x 1600 resolution on a 16-inch screen. This decision makes a significant impact on everyday use—text appears clearer, spreadsheets can display more data, and photos look notably sharper. The 16:10 aspect ratio also contributes positively. Anyone juggling documents, browser tabs, and spreadsheets quickly recognizes the added value of extra vertical space.

The display achieves up to 500 nits of brightness, enhancing usability in bright conditions where many portable monitors tend to falter. With full sRGB coverage and HDR certification, the AP16 starts to present itself as a serious option for a secondary display.
A premium portable monitor, for better or worse
The premium intentions of the AP16 extend beyond its display. Rather than relying on plastic and flimsy folio stands, Ugreen has constructed the monitor with an all-metal chassis and included a magnetic metal stand that offers more flexibility than the usual folding cover. At only 6.5mm thick and weighing under a kilogram, it remains portable enough for easy inclusion in a laptop bag.

Gamers will also find a pleasant feature—the 165Hz refresh rate is unusually high for monitors in this category, enhancing the smoothness of fast-paced games compared to most portable screens. However, all these enhancements come at a price. Priced at $349.99, the AP16 enters a range where consumers may begin comparing it to larger desktop monitors or even affordable tablets.
Nonetheless, for users seeking portability without compromising on image quality, build quality, or refresh rate, Ugreen's latest monitor presents a strong case. While it is indeed pricier, you can clearly see where the investment has been made.

Purchasing a laptop may soon come with an immediate carbon score thanks to AI
Researchers aim for AI to estimate the environmental cost of your upcoming laptop
When looking for a new laptop, most buyers tend to compare specifications such as performance, battery life, display quality, and price. However, an emerging AI-driven initiative could soon add another criterion to this list: carbon footprint. Researchers are working on AI systems capable of calculating and displaying the environmental impact of consumer electronics in real-time, potentially providing shoppers with immediate sustainability information prior to making a purchase. This initiative aims to bring the level of emissions transparency seen in flight booking services into the realm of consumer technology.

Anthropic suspends Fable 5 and Mythos 5 following a directive from the U.S. government
Anthropic is facing ongoing difficulties with the U.S. government. The company has been directed to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals, including foreign employees of Anthropic working in the United States. Anthropic announced that it received this directive on June 12 and is disabling the two models for all customers to adhere to these instructions. Other models from Anthropic remain unaffected. The government has not publicly detailed the specific national security concerns, but Anthropic indicates that the order is connected to a reported method for circumventing, or jailbreaking, the safeguards of Fable 5.
