Hidden treasures on Prime Video that will linger with you well beyond the end credits
Prime Video
This weekend's film selections on Prime Video feature a budget-friendly sci-fi that transforms a dinner gathering into an existential ordeal, a Swedish dramedy that will leave you in tears before you realize it, and one of Adam Driver's subtly heart-wrenching performances in a story about a man who writes poetry and drives a bus for his job.
We also provide guides for the best new movies to stream, top films on Netflix, Hulu, the best free movies, and the finest movies on Amazon Prime Video.
Coherence (2013)
Genre: Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller
IMDB rating: 7.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes (critics): 89%
Eight friends come together for a dinner party on the night a comet passes by. The lights go out, and cell phones stop functioning. Then things take a bizarre turn. The comet has shattered reality, and stepping outside poses the risk of being trapped in a labyrinth of parallel universes where identical versions of themselves exist.
Produced on a meager budget of $50,000, with no script, lighting equipment, and actors who were given character backstories but no idea what would unfold next, Coherence is one of the most underappreciated low-budget sci-fi films ever. Its lasting impact stems from its use of quantum mechanics not just as a plot device but as a vehicle to explore uncomfortable issues regarding identity and the choices we like to think we wouldn’t make.
You can stream Coherence on Prime Video.
A Man Called Ove (2015)
Genre: Drama, Dark Comedy
IMDB rating: 7.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes (critics): 90%
Ove is a 59-year-old widower in Sweden who has resolved to end his life. He possesses rules, principles, a short temper, and a complete lack of interest in the noisy young family that has just moved in next door and crushed his mailbox.
Based on Fredrik Backman’s internationally acclaimed novel, A Man Called Ove earns its heartfelt moments through a hard journey, making you confront real sorrow before allowing any brightness in. The film received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Foreign Language Film. I appreciate how the film doesn’t demand that you find Ove likable until it provides a reason for you to do so.
You can watch A Man Called Ove on Prime Video.
Paterson (2016)
Genre: Drama
IMDB rating: 7.3/10
Rotten Tomatoes (critics): 96%
Paterson is a bus driver in New Jersey. He wakes up at the same hour every day, drives the same route, has lunch by the same waterfall, and writes poetry in a concealed notebook. Nothing spectacular occurs, and that’s precisely the point.
This serene, mesmerizing film explores the beauty of routine and the essence of discovering meaning in a life that may seem ordinary from the outside. Adam Driver delivers one of his most subtle and profoundly emotional performances here, and the film gradually envelops you with its warmth without ever explicitly signaling its arrival.
You can see Paterson on Prime Video.
