Instagram's new Your Algorithm feature allows you to have a say in what appears in your feed.

For years, Instagram has been subtly curating your feed without really consulting your preferences. However, that is about to change.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that the Your Algorithm feature, which allows you to view and modify the topics Instagram believes you are interested in, will soon be available in your main feed. Previously, it was already active in the Reels and Explore sections, and this update brings it to the area where most users spend their time.

What is Your Algorithm, and how does it function?

Your Algorithm reveals the topics that the platform thinks you are most invested in and enables you to manage them. You can view the complete list, add topics you want to see more of, and remove those you are not interested in.

Currently, the feature focuses solely on topics, but Instagram has stated it is working on extending it to include specific individuals, various moods, and content types.

Mosseri mentioned that the feature stems from a significant advancement in AI models. For years, ranking systems relied on data that was difficult for humans to interpret. Now, large language models can analyze content clusters and present them in straightforward terms, making this feature feasible.

      Why is this important?

Mosseri was unusually open in his announcement. He recognized that while algorithmic recommendations can be beneficial, they have also gradually deprived users of control over time.

Your feed learned from your interactions, but you weren't able to communicate your preferences. Eventually, it turned into a one-sided interaction.

Mosseri noted that Instagram aims to design future updates by prioritizing real control for users. He also hinted at a more ambitious future where AI will create entirely personalized app experiences in real-time, although he acknowledged that implementing such a system is considerably more complex.

TikTok is experimenting with voice calls in DMs, as scrolling alone wasn't sufficient.

It seems that simply scrolling, texting, and gaming within your DMs wasn't enough.

TikTok is reportedly testing the ability to make voice calls through direct messages, a feature that could position the short-video app in closer competition with instant messaging platforms like Messenger and WhatsApp. Jonah Manzano recently spotted this feature on X, sharing screenshots that included an incoming call notification marked "TikTok Audio" and a phone icon added to the DM interface.

New research indicates that TikTok’s "Not Interested" button is only a short-term solution, with unwanted content reappearing in your feed within minutes.

If you've been pressing TikTok's "Not Interested" button in hopes of regaining your feed, new findings suggest its effectiveness is limited. A study from Northeastern University's Khoury College of Computer Sciences discovered that the feature provides only brief relief, as unwanted content resurfaces shortly after a user stops using it.
