The trailer for Social Reckoning has been released, and Jeremy Strong seems to be an ideal selection for the role of Mark Zuckerberg.
Aaron Sorkin returns with a sequel to The Social Network
Sixteen years ago, The Social Network transformed the story of Facebook's inception into one of the most celebrated films of the century. Now, Aaron Sorkin is back, taking on the dual role of writer and director. Sony Pictures today released the first complete trailer for The Social Reckoning, and it is just as gripping as one would expect.
This film is not a direct sequel but rather a companion piece that explores the aftermath of Facebook's evolution from a dorm room idea to a platform that altered the world—sometimes negatively.
What is The Social Reckoning about?
The story revolves around Frances Haugen, a Facebook engineer who leaked a significant number of internal company documents to the Wall Street Journal in 2021. This revelation highlighted how the platform knowingly exacerbated harm to teenagers and allowed misinformation to proliferate globally.
Known as The Facebook Files, that reporting unveiled the realities of Facebook's internal research practices. The tagline “Every revolution begins with a reckoning” positions the film as more than just a corporate scandal narrative.
Mikey Madison, who won the Best Actress Oscar for Anora, portrays Haugen. Jeremy Allen White takes on the role of WSJ reporter Jeff Horwitz, who assisted Haugen in revealing those hidden truths. The supporting cast includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr.
Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg is the standout casting choice of the year
Jesse Eisenberg, who depicted Zuckerberg in the original film and received an Oscar nomination for his performance, chose not to reprise his role in The Social Reckoning. Sorkin instead cast Jeremy Strong, known for his role in Succession, who has excelled at portraying complex characters. The trailer highlights Strong's ability to capture Zuckerberg’s flat delivery and eerie stillness.
When asked if he consulted Eisenberg about playing the role, Strong replied succinctly that it didn't influence what he planned to do. This confidence is evident throughout the trailer. Strong presents Zuckerberg as a figure who has fully embraced his power, presenting himself with a deadpan demeanor as a “professional defendant” while preparing for congressional testimony.
Strong describes the movie's script as one of the best he has ever encountered, noting that it addresses critical global issues. The Social Reckoning is scheduled to hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
