Apple appears to have finally acknowledged the existence of the HomePod mini.

Apple’s lineup of smart home devices might be getting an update after a prolonged period of inactivity. As reported by Mark Gurman, Apple is in the process of preparing new versions of the Apple TV set-top box and the HomePod mini, with anticipated launches slated for later this fall.

This timing is significant, as Apple’s smart home products have largely remained static, while competitors like Amazon and Google have actively expanded their smart home ecosystems with AI-driven assistants and connected gadgets. Apple seems poised to realign its home device offerings with its upcoming Siri and Apple Intelligence strategy.

Progress in Apple’s smart home initiative is finally underway

According to Bloomberg's report, the new Apple TV hardware is essentially finalized and nearly ready for launch. Gurman notes that Apple initially aimed to introduce the updated device sooner, but setbacks linked to Siri and Apple Intelligence have pushed the release date back into 2026.

It is expected that while the external design of the updated Apple TV will not undergo significant changes, major internal upgrades are anticipated. Apple is reportedly placing a strong emphasis on AI capabilities, including support for this version of Siri and features related to Apple Intelligence, which the current Apple TV hardware cannot adequately support.

One of the key upgrades expected is a newer chip to take the place of the outdated A15 processor currently powering the Apple TV 4K. Gurman mentions that the existing model has begun to feel slower compared to more recent Apple devices, making an upgrade increasingly necessary.

The HomePod mini is also expected to receive an update, but Apple seems to be adopting a more cautious approach with the smaller smart speaker. Bloomberg reports that a primary change will include support for enhanced Siri and AI features through a more recent wireless chip.

Apple appears to have much larger smart home ambitions beyond just these two devices. Gurman states that the company is still in the works on a postponed smart home hub that will feature a display and facial recognition technology, along with deeper integration of AI across Apple's ecosystem.

Moreover, Apple is preparing AI-driven smart glasses and upcoming Siri enhancements designed to operate more like contemporary conversational AI assistants instead of traditional voice command systems.

      The significance of this development

Apple’s smart home ecosystem has seemed increasingly stagnant compared to its competitors. While Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have grown into extensive AI-powered systems, Apple’s Siri and HomePod products have struggled to keep pace.

The upcoming Apple TV and HomePod mini signify Apple’s effort to revamp its smart home strategy focused on AI rather than just delivering incremental hardware improvements. For those already invested in the Apple ecosystem, these upgrades could be important, as many future features of Siri and Apple Intelligence may depend on newer processors and updated hardware.

      What lies ahead

Apple is predicted to provide further insights into its AI strategy during WWDC and forthcoming software releases associated with iOS 27 and iOS 28. If Bloomberg's report holds true, the revamped Apple TV and HomePod mini may launch this fall alongside Apple's broader AI-centered software initiatives.

However, Apple’s greater challenge may extend beyond merely releasing new hardware. It will also need to persuade users that Siri and Apple Intelligence are finally capable of competing in a smart home market that has significantly advanced during Apple's years of delay.
