Apple has finally revisited the HomePod mini.

Apple’s smart home product range seems set for a refresh after a long period of relative quiet. A recent report by Mark Gurman indicates that Apple is preparing updated versions of both the Apple TV set-top box and the HomePod mini, with launches anticipated later this fall.

This timing is significant, as Apple’s home-oriented offerings have mostly remained static while competitors like Amazon and Google have aggressively expanded their smart home ecosystems with AI-driven assistants and interconnected devices. It appears Apple is now ready to regroup its home products around the upcoming Siri and Apple Intelligence innovations.

Apple's smart home initiative appears to be gaining momentum again.

As reported by Bloomberg, the new Apple TV hardware is essentially finalized and close to being released. Gurman mentions that Apple initially intended to launch the updated device sooner, but various delays related to Siri and Apple Intelligence have pushed the timeline to 2026.

The refreshed Apple TV is not expected to undergo significant external hardware changes, but internal upgrades are likely to be much more impactful. Apple is reportedly concentrating on AI readiness, including support for new Siri capabilities and Apple Intelligence features that the current Apple TV hardware doesn't fully accommodate.

One of the major anticipated improvements is a new chip that will replace the aging A15 processor currently powering the Apple TV 4K. Gurman points out that the existing model has begun to feel sluggish compared to newer Apple devices, making a refresh more essential.

The HomePod mini is also expected to receive an update, although Apple seems to be taking a more cautious approach with the smaller smart speaker. Bloomberg reports that the key enhancement will involve enabling support for Apple’s upgraded Siri and AI features through a new wireless chip.

Apple’s broader smart home ambitions appear to extend beyond just these two devices. Gurman reports that the company is still working on a postponed smart home hub featuring a display and facial recognition capabilities, along with deeper AI integration throughout Apple’s ecosystem.

Additionally, the company is reportedly preparing AI-powered smart glasses and future Siri enhancements designed to operate more like contemporary conversational AI assistants rather than traditional voice-command systems.

      The significance of this development

Apple’s smart home ecosystem has increasingly felt stagnant in comparison to its competitors. While Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have evolved into comprehensive AI-powered ecosystems, Apple’s Siri and HomePod products have struggled to keep up.

The new Apple TV and HomePod mini seem to represent Apple’s effort to refine its smart home strategy with an emphasis on AI instead of merely rolling out incremental hardware improvements. For users already part of Apple’s ecosystem, these upgrades could hold importance since numerous future Siri and Apple Intelligence features may depend on newer chips and upgraded hardware.

      What comes next

Apple is expected to provide more insights into its AI roadmap during WWDC and subsequent software announcements linked to iOS 27 and iOS 28. If Bloomberg’s report is accurate, the updated Apple TV and HomePod mini may launch this fall alongside Apple’s larger AI-focused software rollout.

The greater challenge for Apple may not be merely the release of new hardware. It will also need to persuade users that Siri and Apple Intelligence can indeed compete in a smart home market that has advanced significantly during Apple’s years of delay.
