Vertu's latest foldable phone features alligator leather, solid gold, and comes with an appropriately extravagant price.
Luxury smartphone manufacturer Vertu has announced its latest foldable device, the Vertu Alphafold, which may rank among the most opulent phones released in recent years. This smartphone fuses foldable technology with luxurious leather, gold embellishments, AI-driven business functionalities, and a high-end price tag, clearly targeting affluent consumers who seek both exclusivity and high performance.
Just the pricing is eye-catching. The standard version crafted from calfskin leather starts at $6,880, while the alligator leather variant escalates to $8,800. For those desiring something even more lavish, Vertu offers bespoke models adorned with gold accents and diamonds that can reach a staggering price of $46,800.
At this price range, the Alphafold costs significantly more than flagship foldable phones from brands like Samsung, OPPO, or Huawei.
A Foldable Designed for Luxury and Business
In contrast to most foldable smartphones that emphasize entertainment, photography, or gaming, Vertu markets the Alphafold as a business-oriented AI device tailored for executives and discerning buyers. The phone features an AI assistant named Hermes Agent, which Vertu claims can assist with managing schedules, approving workflows, planning travel, and handling enterprise tasks via natural language commands. The assistant is said to integrate with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, and Amazon.
Vertu also places a strong emphasis on privacy and security. The company asserts that sensitive data can be processed locally on the device thanks to a specialized A5 security chip, while critical actions such as financial approvals still necessitate user confirmation.
In terms of specifications, the Alphafold boasts an 8.05-inch foldable OLED display alongside a 6.53-inch outer screen, both with 120Hz refresh rates. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and is equipped with a hefty 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery that supports fast wired and wireless charging.
The camera system comprises a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 5-megapixel telephoto camera. Vertu claims the hinge mechanism is made of titanium and carbon fiber, rated for up to 650,000 folds. The company continues its tradition of luxury smartphones with handcrafted finishes, concierge services, and customizable detailing.
Nevertheless, one component has already ignited online discussions: the Vertu Alphafold may not feature entirely original hardware. Reports indicate that it is essentially a heavily modified version of the Nubia Fold, which was first introduced in China in late 2025, implying that much of its underlying technology may already exist in a significantly cheaper model.
Why This Matters
The Alphafold exemplifies how foldable phones are gradually transitioning from mass-market consumer electronics to luxury lifestyle items. While most smartphone manufacturers compete on camera quality, performance, or AI capabilities, Vertu continues to cater to customers who prioritize exclusivity, artisanal craftsmanship, and status.
At the same time, the launch illustrates how AI branding is becoming integral to even the most luxurious smartphones, especially those aimed at business users. Although foldable devices currently constitute a minor segment of the global smartphone market, Vertu clearly sees potential for ultra-premium niche products. Whether consumers will actually invest the equivalent of a luxury car's price in a foldable smartphone remains to be seen. However, the Vertu Alphafold undeniably demonstrates that in 2026, smartphones can also serve as fashion accessories for the ultra-wealthy.
