Samsung's foldable devices have consistently set the standard in terms of polish and software, yet one recurring issue with the Galaxy Z Fold series has been battery life. Recently, a new leak indicates that Samsung might finally be working to resolve this issue with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, along with enhancements to the camera and a slimmer profile.
According to a report from the Greek site TechManiacs, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could be equipped with a bigger 5,000mAh battery, a significant increase from the 4,400mAh battery found in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. If correct, this change would represent one of the most substantial hardware improvements in Samsung’s foldable lineup in recent years.
Samsung may finally be making strides in foldable hardware
Battery capacity has become a notable drawback for Samsung's foldables, particularly as competitors like OnePlus, Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi continue to introduce larger batteries within thinner designs. While Samsung has focused on aspects like weight, software optimization, and ruggedness, the company has faced criticism for utilizing comparatively small batteries in relation to its rivals.
The recent leak suggests that Samsung is attempting to strike a balance. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset while becoming slightly slimmer and lighter at 4.1mm when unfolded and weighing approximately 210 grams. This would make it around 5 grams lighter than its predecessor, despite the increase in battery size.
Camera enhancements are also reportedly in the pipeline. Samsung is anticipated to keep the 200MP main sensor and the 10MP front-facing camera, while upgrading the ultra-wide camera to 50MP. There is currently no information regarding the telephoto sensor, although the Fold 7 had a 10MP setup.
A new “wide” foldable may also be on the horizon
The report also mentions another foldable device referred to as the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.” Samsung has yet to officially confirm this product, but the leak indicates it could feature an alternative foldable design.
Per the report, this device might utilize a 4:3 aspect ratio for its inner display, accompanied by dual 50MP rear cameras and a 4,800mAh battery. It is also expected to weigh around 200 grams.
Should Samsung introduce a wider foldable, it could indicate that the company is exploring different form factors as competition in the foldable market ramps up.

Samsung continues to be a key player in the foldable market, but it has faced increasing pressure from brands offering sleeker designs, larger batteries, and quicker charging.

Samsung is anticipated to reveal the Galaxy Z Fold 8 later this year, alongside the next Galaxy Z Flip models. If these leaks hold true, the Fold 8 may focus less on radical redesigns and more on finally addressing the practical issues users have long complained about.
