Apple is gearing up for a significant expansion of its AI capabilities for iPhones and iPads with the upcoming iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This update is set to introduce AI-enhanced writing assistance, natural-language app shortcuts, improved Siri functionalities, and even AI-created wallpapers, as Apple seeks to compete with companies like Google and Samsung in consumer AI offerings.
These new features are anticipated to be revealed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, with a public release planned for later this year.

The report indicates that one of the primary enhancements in iOS 27 will be the introduction of advanced AI writing tools. Apple is reportedly developing a grammar-checking feature akin to Grammarly, which will suggest edits, corrections, and rewrites directly within text fields throughout the operating system. This tool is expected to utilize a translucent interface, displaying the original text alongside AI-generated edits. Users should be able to accept specific changes, approve all suggestions, or disregard them altogether.

Additionally, Apple is testing a new “Write With Siri” feature incorporated directly into the keyboard interface. Another functionality, “Help Me Write,” may become available when users invoke Siri while typing.
A significant change may also come with Apple’s revamp of the Shortcuts app. The updated version is said to enable users to create automations simply by describing their requests in natural language, rather than having to construct commands manually. For instance, users could instruct Siri to automatically summarize PDFs, manage their calendars, or execute smart home commands without having to set up workflows themselves.

The timing of these enhancements is crucial, as Apple faces increasing pressure to keep pace with rapid AI developments from Google, Samsung, OpenAI, and Microsoft. Google has recently unveiled new AI features for Android, which include AI-generated widgets, contextual task management, and sophisticated voice interactions through Gemini Intelligence.
So far, Apple’s AI rollout has been more measured and slower compared to many competitors. While the company continues to prioritize privacy and on-device processing, critics contend that Siri and Apple Intelligence still trail behind other modern AI assistants regarding conversational ability and versatility.

Another potential addition to iOS 27 is AI-generated wallpapers. Apple is reportedly planning to incorporate generative wallpaper creation into the existing Image Playground framework, allowing users to create personalized home screen and lock screen backgrounds based on prompts.
