A new Xbox controller is on the way, and it isn’t what you might anticipate.
Microsoft is apparently preparing to launch a new Xbox controller, which appears to be quite different from the usual offerings from the brand. According to a report from Tecnoblog, this controller is designed to be compact and is likely aimed at Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The redesign goes beyond just aesthetics, as the leaked documents indicate enhanced connectivity for a cloud-centric experience.
What will the new Xbox controller look like?

The leaked images depict a controller that looks more compact, appearing smaller than the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. The report even draws comparisons to other gamepads, such as the HyperX Clutch Tanto and 8BitDo SN30 Pro, highlighting its suitability for cloud gaming rather than a full console experience.
Despite the reduced size, the controller is said to maintain standard Xbox-style buttons, bumpers, and triggers. The images also reveal a USB-C port on the top and a mysterious button, which might serve for pairing or mode-switching. Additionally, there seems to be an area designated for indicator lights, possibly indicating whether the controller is in use for traditional Xbox gameplay or cloud gaming.
How connectivity is being enhanced

A major improvement is the controller's connectivity options. The documentation indicates that it will support both Bluetooth and WiFi 6, although the latter will be limited to 20MHz bandwidth. It is expected to use Realtek’s RTL8730E chip, containing two ARM Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. This Wi-Fi capability could be crucial for Microsoft to achieve lower-latency cloud gaming connections and more seamless transitions between local and cloud modes. The controller will also feature a built-in rechargeable 500mAh battery, marking a significant shift from Microsoft’s usual practice of using AA batteries for its standard Xbox controllers.
Two colors, but no launch date
Microsoft reportedly plans to release the controller in at least two colors, with Tecnoblog showcasing both black and white variants. As of now, there is no confirmed release date, and the device has not yet been seen in FCC filings, indicating that a global launch might still be some time away.
