Sony's wearable air conditioner has returned, and it appears to be even cooler than before.
This compact Sony wearable air conditioner might seem absurd until a heatwave arrives.
Sony has recently unveiled a new wearable device that isn’t your standard smartwatch, fitness tracker, or AI smart glasses—it’s something much more functional. The company has introduced the Reon Pocket Pro Plus, the latest iteration of its cooling wearable. The Reon line began as a crowdfunding initiative in 2019 and has since expanded throughout Asia and certain Western markets; the upgraded model is now set to launch in the UK and Europe.
How the Sony wearable maintains your cool
The Reon Pocket Pro Plus is not merely a collar fan. It employs the Peltier effect, featuring an electrically cooled metal plate located at the neck’s base. This specific placement is intentional, as it targets an area where cooling is felt more quickly due to the proximity of blood flow to the skin surface. Sony asserts that the new model provides a 2-degree Celsius (or 3.6-degree Fahrenheit) enhancement in cooling performance when compared to its predecessor.
Sony claims a 20% improvement, further enhanced by a refined cooling algorithm that tracks temperature variations on the device as well as in the surrounding environment.
The general design of the Reon Pocket Pro Plus closely resembles that of the earlier Reon Pocket Pro model. It is designed to sit at the back of your neck, underneath your clothing, utilizing a small fan to circulate air in the vicinity. However, Sony has improved the fit, making the device more securely positioned on the neck and shoulders, alleviating concerns about it slipping off during movement. An automatic shutdown feature has also been incorporated to safeguard the device from overheating.
What are the new features?
Sony is including a second-generation Pocket Tag with the Reon Pocket Pro Plus, which is now smaller and monitors ambient temperature and humidity for optimal cooling. Additionally, there is a companion app for manual adjustments and customization, but it’s not necessary to use it completely. With a full charge, the Reon Pocket Pro Plus can operate for up to 10 hours on the second-highest cooling setting.
The company has announced that the Reon Pocket Pro Plus is priced at £199 in the UK and €220 in Europe, although availability in the US has not yet been confirmed.
