Korea greets a robotic Buddhist monk at an actual monastery, signaling a glimpse of the future.
Buddhism has embraced the age of robotics with a monk named Gabi.
A humanoid robot participated in a Buddhist ceremony in Seoul, creating an impressive scene. The robot, referred to as Gabi, was unveiled at Jogyesa Temple in central Seoul during a pre-Buddha’s Birthday celebration. Standing at 1.3 meters tall, Gabi was bestowed with the Dharma name “Gabi” in a special ceremony led by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, which is the largest Buddhist order in South Korea.
The reasoning behind a robot becoming a genuine monk in an authentic temple
This is not merely a gimmick from a technology demonstration. The robot donned traditional Buddhist robes, exhibited bowing and praying, and took part in the ceremony alongside actual monks. According to AP, Gabi is set to function as an honorary monk during the festive period surrounding Buddha’s Birthday.
The Jogye Order views this initiative as part of a larger effort to engage younger generations with Buddhism in South Korea. The country has seen a decline in its Buddhist population, prompting the order to adopt more contemporary outreach strategies, such as digital tools and culturally relevant programs aimed at youth.
Gabi’s debut followed an earlier public appearance at Bongeunsa Temple located in Seoul’s Gangnam District. In March, Buddhistdoor reported that the robot was welcoming visitors, explaining Buddhist practices like the 108 prostrations, and responding to inquiries in both Korean and English.
The intersection of faith and automation
This is not the first occasion of technology converging with faith. Japan has previously experimented with robotic preachers, including Mindar, an android linked to Kyoto’s Kōdai-ji temple that delivers Buddhist sermons. What sets this moment apart is the current surge in AI, as people become increasingly accustomed to seeking advice, companionship, and emotional support from machines.
Thus, the key questions extend beyond the robot's human likeness. Can a machine genuinely convey religious teachings? Is it appropriate for it to offer spiritual guidance? Where should human monks distinguish between utilizing technology as a tool and allowing it to represent a tradition?
At present, Gabi serves more as a symbol than a transformative figure. It is not intended to replace human monks or shift Buddhism into a robot-led faith.
