ChatGPT will cease discussing goblins and gremlins as it moves away from its "nerdy" image.
A "Nerdy" personality setting inadvertently led ChatGPT to develop a fondness for goblins.
If you've been engaging with ChatGPT recently and have noticed it making strangely specific references to goblins, gremlins, ogres, or trolls, you’re not imagining it. OpenAI has clarified why ChatGPT has taken on this peculiar habit and how they plan to rectify it.
How a “nerdy” trait turned into a widespread issue
The issue quietly emerged with the release of GPT-5.1 in November. Following that launch, the occurrence of the term “goblin” in ChatGPT's responses surged by 175%, while references to “gremlin” increased by 52%. The source of the trouble was identified as one of ChatGPT's optional personality settings, labeled “Nerdy,” which aimed to make the AI sound playful and intellectually curious.
During its training, OpenAI inadvertently awarded the model disproportionately for responses that utilized creature-related metaphors, causing the tendency to take hold rapidly.
How did one personality setting lead to so much goblin chatter?
Here's where it gets interesting. Even users who never activated the Nerdy personality began to notice goblin references in their conversations. This is due to the fact that AI training encompasses more than just one personality setting. Once the ChatGPT model was rewarded for that style, the behavior infiltrated general responses across the board.
OpenAI notes that the Nerdy personality constituted only 2.5% of all ChatGPT responses, yet it was responsible for 66.7% of all goblin mentions.
So how is OpenAI resolving this issue?
OpenAI discontinued the Nerdy personality in March with the release of ChatGPT-5.4, which led to a significant decline in goblin references. The company also removed the reward signal prompting this behavior and filtered training data to limit mentions of other mythical creatures.
Conversely, its coding tool, Codex, required a separate override instruction since it had already begun training before the cause was identified. Fantasy enthusiasts can still manually activate goblin mode in Codex if they wish.
OpenAI is additionally addressing other decisions related to personality, including indefinitely postponing the previously announced adult mode for verified users.

Apple reports that users are purchasing Macs faster than ever, resulting in a supply shortage.
Apple is facing a challenging situation: it simply cannot produce enough Macs. During its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook confirmed that demand for the Mac lineup has exceeded the company's supply capacity—a sentiment one wouldn't have expected to express a few years ago when the Mac's growth was overshadowed by the iPhone.
The reasons are intriguing. The Mac Mini and Mac Studio are selling rapidly, and Cook attributes a significant portion of this surge to users recognizing the capabilities of Apple Silicon for running AI tools and agentic workflows locally. This trend appears to have caught the company off guard. When the CEO admits to having "undercalled the demand," it’s genuinely surprising.
