Its extensive reach across different age groups provides scammers with a vast pool of potential victims, including older users who may depend on the platform to stay in touch with family, community organizations, local sellers, and friends from the past.

      The FTC stated that scammers exploit the inherent design of social media platforms to their benefit. They can purchase targeted advertisements, analyze public posts, impersonate brands, hack accounts, or pose as familiar individuals. A deceptive shopping advertisement may lead to a counterfeit retail website, while a friendly message could morph into an investment scheme. A romance scam might begin with a profile review and evolve into a fabricated emergency.

      How do these scams reach users?

      Investment scams accounted for the largest losses, totaling $1.1 billion reported in 2025. Many of these scams began with advertisements, posts, or WhatsApp groups featuring fake success stories. Shopping scams were the most frequently reported, where victims often made purchases from social media ads that never materialized. Romance scams also saw an increase through social platforms, with nearly 60% of reported losses from such scams originating there.

      As AI technology makes it harder to detect fake messages, images, voices, and profiles, social media scams may become increasingly convincing in the future. Currently, the FTC recommends that users keep their profiles private, refrain from seeking investment advice from online-only contacts, and look up a company's name alongside "scam" or "complaint" before making purchases based on social media advertisements.
