Samsung's next foldable devices may finally introduce a much-needed charging feature.
Samsung's upcoming foldable devices may finally feature built-in magnetic Qi2 charging, a long-awaited upgrade for Galaxy users. Leaker Sonny Dickson has released images purportedly showing dummy models of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, and Galaxy Z Flip 8, which reveal circular rings on their backs indicative of magnetic wireless charging support.
Currently, this should be regarded as an early leak rather than definitive confirmation. Dummy units are typically created to display size, layout, and accessory compatibility, and may not accurately represent the final internal components. Nonetheless, the presence of these rings is significant, as Samsung has been cautious in adopting the Qi2 wireless charging system. Although the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was Qi2 Ready certified, it required a compatible case featuring built-in magnets for proper magnetic alignment.
The importance of the ring
The Qi2 technology enhances wireless charging by incorporating magnetic alignment, which assists devices in locking into the correct position for a reliable connection, allowing for charging speeds of up to 15W with greater efficiency and reduced heat. Additionally, it is compatible with all Qi-certified devices.
Foldable devices are likely to gain more advantages from this upgrade than most. Their larger and unconventional shapes can complicate the use of wireless charging pads, leading many users to rely on cases, stands, or magnetic mounts. Having built-in magnetic support would enable Samsung’s foldables to seamlessly integrate with the expanding Qi2 accessory ecosystem, rather than being dependent on specialized cases.

A broader foldable option emerges
The leak also offers another glimpse at Samsung’s anticipated three-model foldable lineup. In addition to the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide appears to be shorter and wider, resembling the shape expected of Apple's first foldable iPhone.
So far, Samsung has not disclosed any details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, leaving questions regarding pricing, launch plans, and charging specifications unanswered. If these dummy models represent the final design, the 2026 foldables may advance beyond “Qi2 Ready” to introduce true magnetic charging.
