After several years, I’m truly looking forward to a new MacBook Pro.
As a fan of Mac, navigating the entire butterfly keyboard situation has been quite challenging, and I must admit that I have appreciated the stability offered by the M-series MacBook Pros.
While each new incremental update hasn't particularly impressed me, the performance and reliability have been a blessing. However, after five years with the same M1 Pro MacBook Pro I bought on launch day, I am ready for an upgrade to a new machine.
If the current leaks and rumors are accurate, the end of this year might be the perfect time to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro. There is speculation about a completely redesigned MacBook Pro being launched later in 2026, and the number of changes is enough to grab any Mac enthusiast’s attention.
A completely new design after five years
The last redesign of the MacBook Pro by Apple happened in 2021, and it was a significant change. It reintroduced ports that had been removed, resolved the keyboard issues, and resulted in a sturdier, more capable device.
While I appreciate the new design aesthetic, I must say I miss the slimmer, more portable form factor, which is now achievable with the power-efficient M series chipsets.
Leaks imply that the upcoming update will feature a "total redesign" with a lighter and thinner chassis. I hope Apple retains all the ports to avoid further controversies, but personally, I wouldn’t mind if the HDMI port were eliminated.
Most new monitors come with USB-C ports, and if removing the HDMI port leads to a thinner design, I would gladly accept that compromise.
The display is set for several upgrades
This is where things become particularly exciting. The M6 MacBook Pro is predicted to introduce two significant display enhancements simultaneously: an OLED panel and a touchscreen.
The OLED feature will offer deeper blacks, improved contrast, and better viewing angles. Coupled with a thinner chassis, this should provide a fantastic display. If Apple employs the same tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro, the brightness is likely to be outstanding as well.
The touchscreen, however, is the more unexpected addition, and I’m uncertain if this will come to fruition. Reports suggest that macOS 27 will upgrade the user interface to accommodate common touch gestures, so we should get confirmation next month at the WWDC 2026 event.
What excites me even more is that the notch will finally be eliminated. According to Mark Gurman, the new design will feature a hole-punch camera cutout along with the Dynamic Island, allowing for Live Activities and other interactive components.
If you’ve read my article on the best Mac utilities, you know I already use an app to enhance the notch, but it will be fantastic to see official support for this change.
A performance boost that matters
The M6 MacBook Pro will be fitted with a new generation of Apple Silicon built on a 2nm process. This marks a significant advancement over the current generation and should lead to substantial improvements in CPU speed, GPU performance, and AI processing capabilities.
What I find even more thrilling, more than the performance enhancements, is the slight possibility that the M6 MacBook Pro might incorporate Apple’s C2 modem for built-in cellular connectivity. My job requires a lot of travel, and having onboard cellular connectivity would be incredibly beneficial.
Although I wouldn't count on it, it would definitely be a transformative feature if it materializes.
The one aspect that could dampen my excitement
Now, we arrive at the part that I am not looking forward to. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has indicated that the M6 MacBook Pros may see a minimum price increase of 20%. Other sources suggest that the new models could be priced $200 to $400 higher.
Given all the upgrades and the current state of RAM prices due to AI developments, I can foresee the price hike being a reality, and I won't be pleased about that.
I may still decide to purchase one, but against all odds, I hope Apple doesn’t raise the base price, or if it does, that the base model starts with more storage and RAM than the current generation.
