Samsung showcases an adorable new tabletop robot, and we are optimistic it will eventually be released.
A delightful AI companion crafted for your workspace reflects Samsung's aspirations for smarter homes, but following the delays and eventual cancellation of Ballie, skepticism is understandable.
Samsung is once again hinting at a compact home robot, this time envisioned as a small tabletop companion that emphasizes charm and practical utility. The company recently highlighted this device at Milan Design Week, promoting it as a friendly assistant meant to occupy your desk or countertop and assist with simple daily tasks. Although specifics are limited, this concept aligns with Samsung’s broader initiative towards AI-enhanced home experiences.
A smaller, more approachable version of home robots
This new robot, named Project Luna, features a circular display attached to a swiveling base, resembling the mechanical personality of Pixar’s Luxo Jr., supplemented by subtle audio cues reminiscent of Wall-E. Unlike larger, more intricate home robots, this device is meant to remain stationary, serving as a smart hub with a bit of character.
Early video content indicates that it can respond to voice commands, present information, and potentially connect with other smart home devices. Although Samsung has not released comprehensive specifications yet, the intent is evident. Project Luna aims to be more user-friendly than conventional robots, integrating seamlessly into your routine rather than interrupting it.
The design also embraces the “cute tech” trend, which may attract casual users who might not have previously considered owning a home robot.
Will this reach the market?
If this sounds familiar, it’s because Samsung has previously pursued a similar concept with Ballie. Introduced in 2020, Ballie was envisioned as a mobile home assistant that could follow users, manage smart home devices, and function as a personal AI companion.
However, Ballie never reached the marketplace. Samsung postponed the project multiple times, discreetly extending timelines before ultimately shelving it. Despite various updates and appearances at events, it never evolved from a concept to a consumer-ready product.
This background makes Project Luna somewhat harder to accept at face value. While it appears promising and arguably more practical than a rolling robot, Samsung has not guaranteed its launch. The company has reiterated that this remains a concept, and it is still unclear whether it will be available for purchase or follow the same trajectory as Ballie.
