Google's upcoming wearable might be the screen-free Fitbit Air, aiming to challenge Whoop's dominance.
The Fitbit Air could be Google's most significant wearable since the Pixel Watch.
Google has been hinting at a screen-less fitness band since late March, and we've now learned its name. According to 9to5Google, this upcoming device will be called the “Google Fitbit Air.” NBA player Stephen Curry has been seen wearing it since the start of 2026, providing the first real glimpse of Google’s response to Whoop.
What is the Fitbit Air and how does it aim to compete with Whoop?
The Fitbit Air directly targets Whoop, the popular screen-less fitness tracker known for its detailed health metrics, such as recovery, strain, and sleep tracking, which are favored by athletes. The Fitbit Air seems to adopt a similar strategy. The name “Air” suggests a slimmer, lightweight design intended for all-day wear without the added bulk of a traditional smartwatch.

A launch at Google I/O appears likely given Curry's public teasing of the device. Some basic features are expected to be free, while advanced tools, including the AI-powered Ask Coach feature, will require a paid subscription.
The Fitbit Air would also be the first significant non-Pixel wearable to debut under Google's direction since the Fitbit acquisition, increasing the pressure on the device to perform well.
What is Google Health and how will it transform the Fitbit experience?
Google
The hardware is just one part of the equation. Google plans to rebrand Fitbit Premium, its current paid subscription service, as Google Health. Furthermore, Google intends to integrate Gemini into the Fitbit app for personalized health insights. These AI capabilities are already being tested in the Fitbit Health Coach public preview.
Once the Fitbit Air is launched, the Health feature will also be renamed to the Google Health Coach. The teaser shared by Curry concluded with a Google “G” devoid of Fitbit branding, which now makes more sense. Google seems to believe that its name carries more influence in the health technology sector than Fitbit does currently.
