      Nvidia rumors are suggesting a peculiar new memory strategy for a refreshed GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, which is being described as both clever and awkward.

      As reported by Wccftech, citing a post from the Chinese Board Channels forums, Nvidia is allegedly readying a new variant of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti with 9GB of GDDR7 memory, in contrast to the current standard of 8GB. The same report indicates that the standard RTX 5060 could also see a similar 9GB variant.

      The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is a solid option for small form factor builds, but its 8GB version falls short.

      The core of the speculation centers around Nvidia’s intended transition to 3GB GDDR7 memory modules. According to Wccftech, Samsung and Micron are increasing the production of these denser chips, enabling board partners to boost VRAM capacity without requiring a wider memory bus or significant board redesigns. Essentially, Nvidia could transition from 8GB to 9GB by utilizing three 3GB modules instead of four 2GB modules.

      This appears to be a clever enhancement for the mid-range graphics card, making it easier to market with more memory. However, there’s a downside.

      What’s the compromise?

      The issue is that this arrangement would likely result in a narrower 96-bit memory bus instead of the 128-bit interface being used by the current RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 models. If Nvidia maintains memory speeds at 28 Gbps, Wccftech estimates that total bandwidth would drop to 336 GB/s, compared to the 448 GB/s of existing 128-bit cards. Even with an increase to 30 Gbps, the bandwidth would still be significantly below that of current models.

      That represents a considerable trade-off. While the rumor suggests Nvidia is discovering a new way to incorporate more VRAM into mainstream cards, it might also be doing so at the cost of one of the essential features that those cards cannot afford to lose.

      This could be Nvidia’s answer to ongoing VRAM shortages and pricing pressures, with these 3GB modules providing Nvidia and its partners a more affordable route to enhanced capacities. The report also notes that laptop RTX 5090 configurations have already begun to utilize 3GB VRAM modules, although this remains part of the same rumor cycle rather than a new confirmed detail from Nvidia.
