Google Home is receiving numerous enhancements to refine your interactions with Gemini.
The most recent update enhances Gemini conversations with quicker responses and improved end-of-speech detection.
The shift from the previous Google Assistant to the new Gemini-powered Google Home has encountered some challenges. Google has been actively addressing these issues, and the latest updates for April 2026 aim to make smart home interactions feel much more natural.
No more “Gemini, I wasn’t finished”
A significant enhancement in this update tackles one of the most disruptive features of voice assistants: being interrupted while speaking. Google has improved Gemini’s end-of-speech detection by taking your speaking speed into account. Whether you take your time to find the right words or speak rapidly, the AI is now better at waiting until you’ve completed your command before responding.
This logic applies to a new layer of “contextual understanding.” Gemini is now more skilled at interpreting surrounding cues to determine precisely what you need. Whether you’re asking to dim the lights, set a timer for pizza, or play a particular music genre, the system is less prone to trigger incorrect actions or request clarifications. Additionally, if you only need simple information like the current time or date, Google has optimized the system to deliver those responses more quickly than before.
Enhanced lists and smarter music
In addition to conversational improvements, Google is enhancing Gemini's productivity and entertainment capabilities. Managing your shopping lists is now more versatile, allowing you to use natural language prompts to transfer items between lists. For example, you can request Gemini to “remove all vegetables from my shopping list” or convert a standard note into a checklist.
Music recognition has also been fine-tuned to better detect personal playlists, even in noisy environments or when the exact name isn’t provided. It aims to reduce instances of “incorrect artist” errors. For iPhone users, live streams from the Nest camera should be more reliable following the update, and the video timeline will appear much clearer.
Completing the update are new Parental Controls and Digital Wellbeing features in the Home app, which allow you to set filters and schedule “quiet periods” to disconnect from Gemini as needed. While these updates may seem like minor adjustments, they significantly enhance Gemini’s ability to blend seamlessly into your home life rather than feeling like a frustrating technological experiment.
