The AirPods Max 2 have finally arrived, but Apple hasn't addressed all the issues that users hoped would be resolved.

After five years, Apple has refreshed the AirPods Max, now featuring a new H2 chip, enhanced noise cancellation, and a wider array of features that align them more closely with Apple’s audio products. On paper, this represents a significant upgrade, but in reality, it is more selective.

Changes Apple has made this time

The primary change is the transition from dual H1 chips to dual H2 chips, the same technology found in the latest AirPods Pro. This advancement introduces a variety of features that were previously lacking in the Max.

Active noise cancellation is reportedly up to 1.5 times more effective, while transparency mode has been adjusted for a more natural sound. Adaptive Audio combines both modes based on your environment, and Conversation Awareness decreases playback when you begin to speak.

Apple has also introduced personalized volume, which adjusts based on your listening preferences over time, in addition to loud sound reduction to handle sudden noise spikes. Live translation is now enabled, facilitating real-time conversations in different languages through the headphones.

Improvements in sound are part of this upgrade

In conjunction with these changes, Apple is rolling out a custom high dynamic range amplifier aimed at enhancing bass response, vocal clarity, and instrument separation, while minimizing distortion at higher volumes.

The original AirPods Max already provided a warm, balanced sound profile, so this enhancement seems to focus on refinement rather than a complete overhaul. The combination of upgraded processing and improved noise cancellation is likely where the most noticeable improvements will be evident.

Lossless audio is included, but with limitations

Support for lossless audio has finally been incorporated, with 24-bit, 48kHz playback available via a wired USB-C connection.

However, over Bluetooth, audio remains restricted to AAC, lacking support for higher-bandwidth wireless codecs. This means lossless listening still necessitates a cable, which seems unusual for a premium pair of headphones in 2026.

New features and their practical applications

Apple is also broadening functionalities beyond audio playback. The digital crown can now serve as a remote shutter for an iPhone camera, while voice isolation is introduced to enhance call clarity and allow for more versatile recording scenarios.

Additionally, head gesture controls have been introduced for interacting with Siri, allowing users to respond by nodding or shaking their heads. These features align the AirPods Max with functionalities already present in AirPods Pro, although their practical application may vary based on context, especially with the larger over-ear design.

What remains unchanged still stands out

Despite the internal updates, the physical design largely remains the same. The AirPods Max 2 continue to feature the metal construction, non-folding structure, and Smart Case, which still provides minimal protection and primarily functions to put the headphones into a low-power state.

The absence of a dedicated power button means the case is still essential for managing battery usage. Battery life remains at around 20 hours, which is increasingly modest compared to competitors that offer nearly 30 hours or more.

The headphones are slightly heavier at about 386 grams, do not fold for easier storage, and still lack any official water or dust resistance rating.

      What this upgrade truly offers

The AirPods Max 2 represent a clear enhancement in areas influenced by processing and software. The H2 chip facilitates a more adaptive listening experience, while advancements in noise cancellation and sound processing should result in improved overall performance.

However, the design, usability limitations, and persistent hardware issues remain unaltered.

Is this enough to warrant the update?

That depends on your expectations. If improved sound refinement, enhanced noise cancellation, and tighter integration with Apple’s ecosystem were your priorities, this update meets those needs.

If you were hoping for a more extensive redesign that addressed comfort, portability, and everyday usability, the AirPods Max 2 may feel more familiar than revolutionary.
