Maul – Shadow Lord provides this legendary Sith Lord with the Star Wars narrative he is worthy of.
Nearly 30 years after his first appearance on screen, the legendary villain Darth Maul makes a triumphant return in his long-awaited Disney+ series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Set a year after the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Maul – Shadow Lord follows the titular character (voiced by Sam Witwer) as he attempts to reconstruct his criminal empire amid the rising Galactic Empire. Concurrently, he hunts down the rogue Jedi Padawan Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon), aiming to take her on as his new apprentice.
At present, only two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord have been released on streaming. Nevertheless, the series has already positioned itself as a distinctive and formidable addition to the Star Wars Universe. It holds a fresh rating from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, prompting Disney and Lucasfilm to begin work on a second season.
The series not only further develops Maul’s narrative but also introduces new characters to the franchise that enhance a compelling crime story. Blending the political and social intrigue of Andor with the animation, charm, and mysticism of The Clone Wars, Maul – Shadow Lord is essential viewing for Star Wars enthusiasts of all ages on Disney+.
Maul shines in Shadow Lord
Disney+ / Disney+
Since his introduction in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Maul has become one of the franchise's most renowned villains. His character received greater complexity and visibility in animated series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. Rising from the ashes of his initial downfall to become a ruthless crime lord, Maul evolved into a formidable and fearsome figure. Voice actor Sam Witwer brings intensity and an unsettling presence to the character with his captivating portrayal.
Maul – Shadow Lord effectively captures the terror associated with his character as he becomes the focal point of his own narrative. Although his organization, the Shadow Collective, disintegrated during the Empire's rise, Maul continues to strike fear into the hearts of crime lords like Nico Deemis (John Carroll Lynch) and Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos). This series bears a resemblance to the Star Wars interpretation of DC's The Penguin, portraying a villain striving for power in a devastated, crime-ridden world while nurturing a new protégé and confronting multiple crime families.
The show also bridges the timeline of Maul’s character between his fall during the Clone Wars and his resurgence in Star Wars: Rebels. We caught a glimpse of Maul’s criminal underworld post-Clone Wars in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which revealed that he was behind the syndicate Crimson Dawn. However, following the film’s lackluster performance, the Star Wars franchise did not further explore this aspect until now with Maul – Shadow Lord.
A grounded, thrilling cop drama in the Star Wars universe

Maul – Shadow Lord enriches the Star Wars franchise by introducing a procedural crime drama set in a galaxy far, far away. While Maul is the main character, we also follow police detective Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura from The Secret Agent) as he investigates Maul’s crimes on the planet Janix. Additionally, Lawson shares a “buddy cop” dynamic with his droid partner, Two-Boots (voiced by Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd).
Lawson is neither a Force-wielder nor an Imperial soldier; he’s an average person striving to do good in an increasingly grim world. He faces additional challenges in connecting with his son, Rylee (Charlie Bushnell), as his police duties often pull him away. Through a character like Lawson, the series shifts away from the Skywalker and Palpatine narratives to tell a localized story about everyday individuals trying to survive and restore order in a galaxy dominated by crime and corruption.
Maul – Shadow Lord draws significant parallels to the cyberpunk film Blade Runner, following Lawson as he navigates his robot-filled police precinct and the vibrant, neon-lit streets of Janix. The series also injects excitement into its narratives, featuring high-speed police chases that involve blasters and hovercrafts.
Star Wars remains a timeless story

Since its launch in 1977, Star Wars has provided profound political and social commentaries through its narratives about the Jedi, the Sith, the Rebellion, and the Galactic Empire. Maul – Shadow Lord upholds this tradition by delving into contemporary issues and anxieties through its characters.
For instance, in the series, Lawson hesitates to involve the Empire in his local investigation into Maul’s activities, worried they might impose a lockdown on Janix. Whether intentional or not, this storyline reflects the growing concerns and conflicts between state and federal law enforcement in the United States in the wake of the Trump Administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
The series also examines crime and its ties to poverty. Branded a criminal alongside the other Jedi, Devon resorts to theft to
