Gen Z frequently utilizes AI, so what’s causing them to develop a dislike for it?

      Gen Z was anticipated to be the most enthusiastic generation regarding AI, but the reality reveals a different perspective.

      Data shows that over half of Gen Z individuals in the US engage with generative AI regularly, leading one to assume they would support it the most. In reality, however, their enthusiasm is waning.

      A recent Gallup survey, reported by the New York Times and conducted in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, involved over 1,500 respondents aged 14 to 29. The findings indicate that Gen Z is becoming more doubtful about the technology they frequently use.

      Is the initial excitement fading?

      The statistics are quite illuminating. The enthusiasm for AI has decreased by 14 percentage points compared to last year, with feelings of hope reducing by nine points and anger increasing by nine points. Only 18% of Gen Z individuals express hopefulness towards AI, while a mere 22% feel excited by it. In contrast, 42% report experiencing anxiety, and 31% admit to feeling outright anger.

      Interestingly, even daily users, who typically have a more positive outlook on AI, are becoming less hopeful. Among daily AI users, excitement and hopefulness have dropped by 18 points and 11 points, respectively, since last year. Clearly, increased exposure is not leading to heightened confidence.

      What’s fueling this frustration?

      Much of this sentiment stems from Gen Z’s concern about the impact of AI on their cognitive abilities. An impressive 80% of respondents believe that using AI tools will likely hinder their future learning. They also express doubt regarding AI's effects on creativity and critical thinking—38% and 42% believe it will do more harm than good in those domains.

      The outlook in the workplace isn’t particularly bright either. Among employed Gen Z individuals, 48% feel that the dangers of AI outweigh the advantages, compared to just 15% who view it positively overall. Additionally, trust in AI-assisted tasks is low, with 69% preferring work done without AI.

      Despite this, Gen Z remains resilient. Nearly half of high school students believe that proficiency in AI will be essential for their future careers. They are not disregarding AI; instead, they are approaching it with caution.
