According to a consumer group, MacBooks remain the most challenging laptops to repair.

A recent repairability report indicates that MacBooks remain the least repairable laptops.

According to the latest Failing the Fix report from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, MacBooks have earned the distinction of being the most difficult laptops to repair.

The 2026 edition of this annual report evaluated various major smartphone and laptop brands based on the repairability of their products.

      What do the findings indicate?

      Apple

The report utilized European repair data along with adjustments related to Right to Repair advocacy. In the laptop category, ASUS received a B+ rating, followed by Acer with a B. HP, Dell, Samsung, and Microsoft were all rated B-, while Lenovo received a C. Apple finished in last place with a C-.

What accounts for Apple's low ranking?

PIRG is quite clear about its findings. In the official summary, it states that Apple ranks last among laptop brands evaluated in the report, with no change in its grade from 2025 to 2026. The organization further notes that overall laptop repairability appears to be stagnant this year, with only minor changes among the major brands.

However, this does not excuse Apple.

PIRG employs laptop grades based on France's repairability index. The evaluation considers factors such as the complexity of disassembling a device, availability of spare parts, repair documentation, tool and fastener requirements, and software support. Greater emphasis is placed on disassembly, as it reflects the real-world challenges consumers are likely to face.

While the report indicates that Apple has made some notable improvements in parts pairing within the smartphone domain, MacBooks still do not receive the same treatment and continue to rank last among laptops this year.
