The most significant upgrade of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 might not be accessible to the majority of consumers.
A recent leak indicates that Samsung may restrict the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2's 5G variant to specific markets, leaving the majority of consumers with the 4G/LTE version.
Samsung is anticipated to unveil its next Ultra-tier smartwatch later this year, and an earlier leak hinted at a significant connectivity enhancement. However, if a new report is accurate, this improvement may not be accessible in all locations.
Is Samsung considering region-specific versions for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?
In February, a Samsung device identified by the model number SM-L716 was found in the GSMA IMEI database. Based on the company's naming conventions, it is assumed to be the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, with the "6" in the model number suggesting potential 5G capability.
Now, Galaxy Club has discovered an internal firmware version for a device with the model number SM-L715F. Given that Samsung usually denotes "0" in the model number for Wi-Fi-only models and "5" for 4G/LTE variants, this new device might be a 4G/LTE version of the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
The report indicates that this does not eliminate the possibility of 5G support for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. Rather, it suggests that Samsung might be preparing two models of the smartwatch. Additionally, the company could restrict the 5G version to South Korea and the US, while making the 4G/LTE version available in other markets.
What might be the reason for this decision?
If Samsung implements this strategy, most consumers worldwide could initially miss out on the major connectivity enhancement. A couple of factors may contribute to this decision.
Firstly, 5G connectivity in a smartwatch could present extra challenges, such as increased battery consumption, which is already a limitation for wearables. Introducing it in select markets may allow Samsung to fine-tune performance and efficiency before a broader launch.
Secondly, it could be a way to assess consumer interest. While 5G represents a clear upgrade in theory, its advantages on a smartwatch might be minimal compared to its benefits for smartphones. By limiting availability, Samsung could evaluate whether consumers genuinely desire 5G functionality on their smartwatch before expanding it more broadly.
Samsung has not yet confirmed any specifics, and little is known about other upgrades that may be in store for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 beyond 5G support. Qualcomm has stated that its new Snapdragon Wear Elite chip will power Samsung's next high-end Wear OS smartwatch, but this has yet to be confirmed by the company.
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 later this year, with more information likely to emerge in the months leading up to the release.
