Google's new complimentary dictation app is the alternative to Willow that you've been anticipating.
Google has quietly released a new iOS app today without any formal announcement. The app, initially discovered by 9to5Google, is named Google AI Edge Eloquent. It is a voice dictation tool that operates primarily offline, transcribing your speech in real time, automatically removing filler words, and providing clean, polished text. Google Eloquent is entirely free, with no subscription or usage limits.
How does Google AI Edge Eloquent function?
Google
Simply open the app, hit record, and begin speaking. A live waveform will track your voice while a real-time transcription is displayed on the screen. Once you stop speaking, the app automatically processes everything.
Filler words like “um” and “ah” are eliminated, mid-sentence corrections are smoothed out, and what’s left is clean, readable text that is copied directly to your clipboard. Four text transformation tools offer additional control:
- Key points: summarizes your dictation into its main ideas in bullet points.
- Formal: rewrites the transcript in a more professional tone.
- Short: condenses the text to its essentials.
- Long: expands the content when more detail is needed.
Additionally, a History tab keeps all previous transcriptions along with usage statistics such as total word count and your words per minute.
Does the Google Eloquent app retain your voice data?
Google
In contrast to most free dictation apps, Google AI Edge Eloquent ensures that your voice data remains completely private. A toggle in the top corner allows you to switch between two modes. In fully offline mode, all audio is stored on your device and is processed using local Gemma-based speech recognition models. No data is sent to a server.
In cloud mode, speech recognition initially occurs on-device, but Gemini models manage the text cleanup via the cloud. This fully local option is especially beneficial for individuals in privacy-sensitive jobs or those who are uncomfortable uploading voice data remotely.
The app also features a personal vocabulary dictionary where you can input names, technical terms, and jargon to enhance accuracy. You can sign in with your Google account to allow the app to automatically access frequently used words from your recent Gmail messages.
Google AI Edge Eloquent is one of the top free alternatives to paid dictation apps in 2026.
Google
Both major competitors, Wispr Flow and Willow, charge $15 per month. They are cloud-based, routing your audio through remote servers. On the other hand, SuperWhisper processes everything locally for enhanced privacy, but it costs $85 annually. Eloquent undercuts all three in price while providing what users desire most — clean, automatic text output with no manual cleanup necessary.
However, Google’s AI Edge Eloquent does have one limitation to note. Wispr Flow, Willow, and SuperWhisper operate across Mac, Windows, and iOS, allowing you to dictate directly into any app. Currently, Eloquent is available only on iOS, with an Android version mentioned in the App Store listing but not yet available on the Play Store.
For casual users or anyone currently paying a monthly subscription for a dictation app due to the lack of credible free alternatives, this significantly changes the landscape. While it may not replace Wispr Flow or Willow for enterprise users requiring cross-platform support, Google has certainly made a strong case for the rest.
