Is Dunesday no longer a possibility? Could shifting the release date potentially rescue Avengers: Doomsday or Dune: Part Three?
Hollywood continuously seeks to capitalize on popular trends, whether it's cinematic universes, live-action adaptations, or, more recently, double features. However, it seems that Marvel Studios might steer clear of the latter with one of its superhero movies. Industry insider John Campea shared that Marvel is contemplating changing the release date for Avengers: Doomsday, mentioning that “There have been very non-committal discussions.” This information hints that the film could launch on the same day as Dune: Part Three, effectively burying the “Dunesday” double feature.
It's premature to determine the veracity of this information. This report follows Jumanji 3’s successful date change from December 11 to December 25, a week post-Dunesday. Campea suggested that Marvel might reschedule Doomsday's release to December 11 to take advantage of a week in IMAX theaters, which were initially allocated for Jumanji 3 before being occupied by Dune: Part Three.
It remains uncertain whether Avengers: Doomsday or Dune: Part Three will achieve a remarkable success similar to the “Barbenheimer” double feature, which saw both Barbie and Oppenheimer earn approximately $2.1 billion globally following their simultaneous releases. The potential Dunesday event resembles another Barbenheimer, featuring two blockbuster films from renowned directors and stellar casts.
As a devoted fan of both Marvel and Dune, I'm eager to see both movies in theaters, and I genuinely hope to experience them as a double feature. Nevertheless, I'm curious if separate releases would benefit both films.
Could Marvel and Dune avoid the Dunesday clash?

Despite both Marvel and Dune being major film franchises, it seems more probable that Avengers: Doomsday would outperform Dune: Part Three at the box office if released concurrently. A study by Greenlight Analytics, reported by Screen Rant, indicated that audiences exhibit greater interest in Avengers: Doomsday compared to Dune: Part Three. The study revealed that 50% of participants expressed desire to see Doomsday on its opening weekend, while 38% favored Dune: Part Three.
The heightened interest in Avengers: Doomsday is unsurprising. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is recognized for its comedic tone, even within darker films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. This comedic appeal has attracted audiences across all age groups, solidifying its status as a highly successful franchise. Given Dune: Part Three’s more serious tone and the longer presence of the MCU in theaters, it's likely that Avengers: Doomsday will draw larger audiences and achieve greater box office success.

Additionally, Avengers: Doomsday aims to be the largest superhero film to date by bringing together prominent figures from both comics and Hollywood. We will witness Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU as the notorious villain, Doctor Doom, alongside the reappearance of beloved Avengers like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth).
Moreover, Avengers: Doomsday will include the X-Men and the Fantastic Four in a long-anticipated crossover with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. One might assume that Dune: Part Three would stand to gain even more if it wasn't competing against the popular superheroes and villains that Marvel will showcase in their upcoming Avengers film.
However, audiences have clearly demonstrated the reality of superhero fatigue in recent years. Many of Marvel’s latest offerings, such as Eternals, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Marvels, have received mixed reviews and have been less profitable than earlier films released before Avengers: Endgame. The inclusion of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday indicates a reliance on nostalgia to recapture audience interest.

While Marvel movies have seen a decrease in theater attendance, original, director-driven projects like Sinners, Weapons, and Marty Supreme have emerged and performed well at the box office. Although the Dune trilogy was adapted from novels that started in the 1960s, much like many of Marvel's films, Villeneuve’s distinct vision set it apart from typical modern blockbusters, leading to a growing popularity following the director’s first two installments.
The initial Dune film barely managed to break even at the box office in 2021, while Dune: Part Two's post-pandemic premiere and compelling storyline propelled the franchise to new heights, earning substantial revenue and acclaim. If this trend continues, Dune 3 could potentially surpass $1 billion at the box office, posing a significant challenge to Avengers: Doomsday.
The next Avengers installment will also need to generate significant revenue to recover its substantial production and marketing expenses. Depending on its overall quality, even with an extensive cast and iconic characters, Doomsday may face difficulties breaking even if it competes against Dune: Part Three.
