The Mac Pro is no longer in production at Apple, and I will miss the cheese-grater powerhouse.
Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro. It has been taken off Apple’s website, and the company has confirmed to 9to5Mac that there are no intentions to release a new version. The buying page now redirects to Apple’s Mac homepage, where the Mac Pro is no longer listed.
What led to the discontinuation of the Mac Pro?
The Mac Pro has had a tumultuous history. It's hard to overlook the notorious “trashcan” design. In 2013, Apple introduced a bold cylindrical redesign at WWDC, with Phil Schiller famously stating, “Can’t innovate anymore, my ass.”

It was audacious and visually striking, but it completely failed to satisfy professional users' needs. It suffered from thermal management problems, and even though it was a Pro device with a hefty price tag, it lacked any expansion options. Apple offered it for six years without a single update before subtly acknowledging it was a misstep.
The redesign in 2019 restored the tower format, featured a stunning design, and included eight PCI Express (PCIe) slots, allowing for expanded capabilities. It was an exceptional machine during the Intel period, but the transition to Apple Silicon marked its end.
Apple / Apple
The signs were evident when Apple launched its first Mac Studio, a much sleeker and more capable desktop that also had a lower price than the Mac Pro. There was little reason to keep the Mac Pro around.
What does this mean for you?
The discontinuation of the Mac Pro shouldn't worry professional users. Apple’s current Mac lineup is more robust than ever, offering choices for various budgets and user needs.
On the laptop front, there's the new entry-level MacBook Neo, the widely appreciated MacBook Air, and the high-performance MacBook Pros. For desktops, you have the 24-inch iMac, the Mac mini, and the Mac Studio.

The Mac Studio clearly represents Apple’s future in pro desktops, and it is expected to be updated with the M4 Ultra or possibly the M5 Ultra. When that releases, it will be the most powerful Mac available for the price, and with the Mac Pro gone, the decision for power users becomes much clearer.
I will miss the cheese grater design.
I was quite fond of the cheese grater design. With the discontinuation of the Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR, that design is now a thing of the past. The back of the Pro Display XDR was far superior to the plain slab of aluminum seen on the Studio Display.

I wish Apple had maintained the same design language for its Studio Display XDR. It made the product unique and iconic. Personally, I will mourn its loss.
