A leak regarding the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 indicates that ultra-tier flagship devices could provide a significant performance advantage.
Leaked specifications of Qualcomm's forthcoming flagship chips indicate that the Pro variant may feature an enhanced GPU and offer support for newer memory technologies.
Qualcomm’s next flagship chip series could have a different structure than initially anticipated. A fresh leak has provided significant details about the speculated Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series, confirming that the company plans to introduce both a standard version and a Pro variant this year. These two chips are aimed at giving smartphone manufacturers greater flexibility across various price ranges, while also increasing the performance gap between regular flagship devices and the more premium “Ultra” models.
What distinguishes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro from the standard version?
Several reports have previously indicated Qualcomm’s strategy of utilizing dual-chip designs, and leaker Digital Chat Station has shared further insights regarding the two variants. Both chips in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series are expected to be produced using TSMC’s 2nm fabrication process and will utilize a 2+3+3 CPU layout, indicating a common architectural basis. However, if the latest leak holds true, the “Pro” variant could provide markedly improved performance.
Digital Chat Station mentions that Qualcomm may equip the Pro model, codenamed SM8975, with an Adreno 850 GPU along with 18MB GMEM, whereas the standard variant, codenamed SM8950, is anticipated to have an Adreno 845 GPU with 12MB GMEM. This configuration could enable the higher-end chip to perform better and operate more efficiently in graphics-intensive scenarios such as gaming.
The two chips are also expected to differ in their memory support. The Pro variant could accommodate both LPDDR6 and LPDDR5X RAM, while the standard model may only support LPDDR5X.
If these details are accurate, it indicates that Qualcomm is adopting a more segmented approach for its flagship chips this year. Furthermore, should Digital Chat Station's assertion that the Pro variant could be considerably more expensive prove true, this division might lead to increased prices for Ultra-tier smartphones. Additionally, it could further accentuate the performance differences among flagship Android phones, even within the same chip family, as manufacturers typically allocate the most advanced hardware to their top-end models.
