The memory crisis could lead to the reintroduction of expandable storage in smartphones.

Mobile phones are becoming pricier, yet expandable storage could emerge as a potential solution.

The current memory shortage is beginning to affect smartphone manufacturers, and consumers are witnessing the repercussions through increased prices and specifications.

Recent reports indicate that the costs of high-end RAM and storage options have now exceeded those of even flagship processors, resulting in a significant change in smartphone construction. This is particularly noteworthy since the processor has traditionally been the most costly component; however, it appears that memory is now taking over that premium position.

      What’s the problem?

The issue is straightforward. The rising demand for AI has led to a sharp increase in memory prices. High-speed storage and RAM chips are being utilized by AI data centres and services, making flagship configurations like 16GB RAM + 1TB storage more costly. Even mid-range devices are sticking with 8GB RAM, as companies are forced to either reduce specifications or increase prices to keep profit margins.

A modern dilemma with a familiar remedy

However, this is where it gets intriguing.

Instead of adhering to the yearly trend of “more internal storage,” smartphone manufacturers could consider an older, more dependable option: expandable storage through microSD cards, especially by using hybrid SIM slots. For those unfamiliar, hybrid SIM slots allow users to select between dual SIM functionality or a single SIM alongside a microSD card.

Why hybrid storage might see a resurgence

Expandable storage effectively addresses a specific issue by enabling users to increase their device's storage capacity. Instead of providing phones with expensive 512GB or 1TB internal storage, companies could opt for smaller base storage, such as 128GB or 256GB, allowing users to expand their storage with microSD cards.

Nevertheless, this approach comes with notable trade-offs.

There’s a reason manufacturers moved away from microSD in the first place. External storage cards often operate at slower speeds compared to internal options, provide less control over performance consistency, and can lead to fragmentation in the user experience.

Apple is now venturing into advertising within Apple Maps, echoing Google's approach

Apple is officially embracing advertising in Apple Maps, which could transform how a billion users explore and interact with the navigation app. The company is moving forward with plans to integrate ads into Apple Maps, allowing businesses to purchase visual space in search results.

Apple's services division is already raking in over $100 billion annually, and monetizing Maps represents the next logical step. The app is utilized by millions of users across iPhones, Apple Watches, and CarPlay dashboards, providing an ideal platform for targeted advertisements.

In recent reports, the iPhone Air is outselling Samsung’s slim phone while surpassing even Apple’s retired Plus model

The iPhone Air is outselling the Plus model and is outpacing Samsung's slender device by a ratio of 3-to-1.

My preferred modern iPhone was the iPhone 13 Mini. It resolved the battery issues of the iPhone 12 Mini while maintaining the same compact design. However, it didn’t generate sufficient sales, leading Apple to discontinue it in favor of a Plus model. Even the Plus model struggled to capture consumer interest, and Apple quietly phased it out last year, replacing it with the sleeker iPhone Air. Initial reports suggested that the iPhone Air was struggling in sales, which seemed like another flop. Nevertheless, new data from Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence indicates those reports may have been overstated.

Sharing files on the Galaxy S26 is now easier with new AirDrop support

Samsung has enhanced Quick Share to function more like Apple’s AirDrop across various regions.

Transferring files on your phone is becoming more straightforward if you're using Samsung's latest model. The Galaxy S26 is receiving AirDrop-style functionality through an update to its built-in sharing system starting March 23.

This update introduces a more recognizable way to send photos, videos, and files between devices without relying on additional applications or workarounds, which is especially beneficial for users transitioning between platforms or those who have experienced unreliable transfer options in the past.
