AMD's CEO suggests that a new Xbox console could be released in 2027.
The upcoming Xbox may be several years off, but AMD's assured demeanor hints that Microsoft is in it for the long haul, aiming for a significant generational upgrade.
In response to Microsoft’s announcement regarding the next-gen Xbox, AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, has shared insights about the anticipated launch timeframe during the company's recent earnings call.
Su confirmed that the next-gen Xbox "is progressing well" and is expected to launch in 2027. She also mentioned an “AMD semi-custom SoC," which could be introduced alongside the new console.
According to Su, "From a product standpoint, Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year."
It appears that AMD’s semi-custom SoC division is developing chips for three different consoles: the Valve Steam Machine, the next-generation Xbox, and Sony's PlayStation 6.
The Xbox 2027 (not its official name) could feature a new semi-custom chip based on AMD’s RDNA 5 architecture, which promises significant performance and efficiency improvements rather than just incremental upgrades.
This new chip could make 4K gaming at 120 fps standard, include advanced ray tracing (possibly even full path tracing) for enhanced lighting and realism, and utilize FSR Redstone, AMD’s latest 4K upscaling technology.
Additionally, faster loading times and a more responsive user interface are also expected.
For those who may not be aware, AMD’s FSR Redstone technology could enable the console to render games at a lower resolution (saving energy) and then reconstruct a sharper, more detailed 4K version in real time.
This method could allow developers to concentrate on creating richer environments and physics, while AI manages the visual upscaling.
In summary, the next-generation Xbox is set to not only be faster and more capable than the Xbox Series X/S, but it should also be smarter, smoother, and significantly more future-proof than current consoles.
Currently, rest assured that progress on the next-gen Xbox is on schedule, and you may have the opportunity to experience it in 2027.
However, the persisting memory crisis, increasing component costs, and the substantial hardware upgrade could lead to a higher price point for early adopters.

Sony’s innovative PlayStation controller patent allows for customizable button layouts.
The idea focuses on comfort and accessibility, with designs that adapt to various hand sizes and play styles.
Sony has filed a new patent envisioning a PlayStation controller with rearrangeable on-screen buttons. This concept replaces most fixed top-face controls with a large touchscreen area.
Rather than having a single D-pad and face-button cluster, users could position touch zones where their thumbs naturally rest. They could also adjust the size of these zones or disable some when a game does not require every input.
The “rapid trigger” revolution: why mechanical switches are becoming obsolete.
In the past decade, "Cherry MX Red" switches were considered the gold standard for gaming. However, by 2026, mechanical switches are set to be outdated for competitive play, with "Hall Effect" (magnetic) technology emerging as the new standard.
Unlike mechanical switches, which require physical contact with metal to register a keystroke, Hall Effect switches use a magnet and sensor. This enables "Rapid Trigger": a feature that resets the key immediately upon lifting a finger slightly, instead of awaiting the key to return past a fixed point. In games such as Valorant or Counter-Strike, this creates a highly responsive experience for counter-strafing.
The gaming industry's adoption of AI is increasing, but many game developers are expressing concerns regarding its impact.
Half of game developers view generative AI as detrimental to the industry.
The gaming sector is rapidly experimenting with AI, but this trend is accompanied by growing anxiety. A recent industry-wide report shows that while developers and studios are actively incorporating generative AI tools into their workflows, a rising number of professionals feel that this technology is ultimately doing more harm than good, particularly in light of ongoing layoffs affecting the gaming sector.
