Microsoft is quietly discontinuing one of Edge's most valued features, which is disappointing for those who utilized it to stay organized online. Collections, the integrated tool that allows users to save, group, and revisit webpages in a visually appealing manner, is officially being phased out.
Edge has begun displaying a notification advising users to move or export their Collections prior to the feature's removal, an indication that its days are numbered. Launched with the Chromium-based Edge in 2020, Collections enable users to save webpages, images, and notes into organized cards that synchronize across devices.
This tool was useful for research, creating shopping lists, planning trips, or simply tracking articles to read later. Its visual and flexible interface made it surprisingly robust, which is why many users became fond of it.
What changes to expect and actions to take now
According to a warning noted by Windows Latest in Edge’s Dev channel, Collections will be removed in an upcoming update, although Microsoft has not provided a specific timeline. When it happens, users will have two methods to save their data.
One option is to transfer Collections into Favorites, resulting in a folder titled “CollectionsExport,” which retains links but omits images and notes. The second option is to export all data as a CSV file to the Documents folder, which serves as a backup but isn't particularly helpful for daily browsing.
It remains uncertain whether Collections will also be eliminated from Edge on mobile devices. Microsoft hasn't clarified the reasons for discontinuing Collections, but this decision aligns with a trend.
The company is scrapping applications like Microsoft Lens on mobile and ceasing support for the lighter version of Windows 11 SE for educational use, even as it subtly implements quality-of-life improvements in applications like Word by making hyperlinking faster and more efficient.
If you utilize Collections, now is the time to access Edge and export your data. Once it's gone, there will be no built-in alternative, which is a significant loss for those who preferred their browser to do more than simply load pages.
