Apple collaborates with Google to enhance Siri and compete in the AI sector

Previous reports had suggested that Apple was in talks with Google about utilizing Gemini to enhance Siri's AI features. This has now been confirmed. Apple has stated that Google's Gemini will be the foundation for the next generation of Siri, representing one of the most significant updates to Apple's voice assistant since its inception.

In a statement shared with CNBC, Apple confirmed the collaboration, explaining that it chose Google after considering several alternatives. "After a thorough assessment, we concluded that Google's technology offers the most robust foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we’re eager to explore the innovative new experiences it will provide for our users," the company remarked.

This initiative has been in the works for some time. Apple initially hinted at a more personalized, AI-enhanced Siri during WWDC 2024, promising improved comprehension of personal context, on-screen awareness, and enhanced control across applications.

However, those features faced delays last year, with Apple acknowledging that development was taking longer than anticipated. In the meantime, competitors like Gemini and ChatGPT advanced rapidly, raising the bar for what conversational AI is expected to achieve.

Integrating Gemini will provide Apple with a more advanced language model and access to Google's extensive, continuously updated knowledge base. This is vital for addressing tasks where Siri has traditionally struggled, such as answering complex inquiries, following up on questions, and synthesizing information from various online sources.

As reported by CNBC, the partnership will leverage Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology to support forthcoming Apple Foundation Models, in addition to Siri. The new version of Siri is expected to launch later this year with iOS 26.4, likely around March or April.

This partnership does not replace Apple's existing integration with ChatGPT, which continues to be used for specific complex queries, although Apple has not clarified how the two systems will function together in the long run.

Google's Gemini will not only enhance a more personalized Siri but also a broader array of upcoming Apple Intelligence features. Nevertheless, relying on Gemini could provide Siri with the revitalization it significantly needs, even if it involves depending on a long-time competitor.

Google removes AI health summaries following exposure of risky medical errors

When Google’s AI provides the wrong answer

We've all experienced it. You start to feel an unusual pain or receive an unclear test result, prompting you to turn to Google for a quick response to "am I okay?" However, Google recently paused its AI-generated health summaries after discovering that seeking medical advice from an AI could be risky.

The company quietly removed numerous AI-generated health summaries from search results after an investigation highlighted instances of inaccurate and alarmingly incorrect information. This issue gained attention after The Guardian reported that these "AI Overviews"—the vibrant boxes appearing at the top of search results—were providing incomplete data.

Microsoft is discontinuing one of Edge’s most appreciated features

The organization tool that Edge users relied on is being phased out.

Microsoft is quietly eliminating one of the best features in Edge, which is disappointing for users who have depended on it to stay organized online. Collections, the integrated tool that allowed users to save, group, and revisit webpages in a visually appealing manner, is now officially being retired.

Edge has begun notifying users to transfer or export their Collections before the feature is discontinued, which usually signals that its end is imminent. Introduced with the Chromium-based Edge in 2020, Collections enabled users to save webpages, images, and notes into organized cards that sync across devices.
