Avengers: Doomsday has the potential to transform the X-Men permanently, and that’s a positive development.

Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, fans have eagerly awaited the X-Men's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After a long wait, we will finally see these mutant heroes teaming up with Thor, Captain America, and the Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday. The highly anticipated return of the team has made this superhero film one of the most awaited movies of 2026.

Marvel has provided a sneak peek of some X-Men through a teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. The trailer depicts Professor X's school as dark, desolate, and in ruins, resembling a haunted place. It also indicates that Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen), who have been adversaries for years, will join forces again in the impending battle against Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.).

Additionally, the teaser showcases Cyclops (James Marsden) unleashing a powerful blast while Sentinels march ominously in the background. This evokes memories of X-Men: Days of Future Past, often considered the best mainline X-Men film. It appears that the X-Men are entering Doomsday transformed, as the film has breathed new life into the heroes and opened doors for an exciting future.

The X-Men embrace their distinctive comic book origins

I appreciated how the MCU has redefined the X-Men in recent years by returning the characters to their roots. In 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine finally dons his iconic yellow suit. In the same film, Channing Tatum realized his long-held ambition to portray Gambit, complete with a costume true to the comics.

Marvel has also rebooted X-Men: The Animated Series with the Disney+ show, X-Men ’97. This new series has done a better job of showcasing characters like Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm compared to Fox's films, where Wolverine often overshadowed his teammates.

Following these successful projects, Avengers: Doomsday seems to be following suit with its depiction of the X-Men. The film’s teaser features Cyclops in a blue and yellow costume, reminiscent of the one from the ’90s comics. Moreover, the Sentinels seem to be designed after their comic book versions.

While Wolverine might reappear alongside Deadpool in Doomsday, the current cast list indicates the narrative will focus more on X-Men such as Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, and their allies. This film could finally do justice to these characters after Wolverine dominated the X-Men film franchise for years.

Marvel might be tapping into nostalgia with the X-Men to draw viewers back to theaters. Regardless, Doomsday demonstrates that the MCU continues to celebrate the unique visual style of the source material. Fox's X-Men films appeared hesitant to embrace comic book aesthetics, opting for generic black leather suits instead of the original colorful costumes.

This approach not only hindered the films from standing out among other sci-fi movies, but it also alienated fans of the comics. Although Doomsday is likely to have a darker tone, it has already taken steps to capture the comic's style and spirit.

The X-Men could receive a fitting conclusion and a fresh start

It seems that Avengers: Doomsday will culminate in the deaths of many beloved Marvel heroes, including the X-Men, in a catastrophic event akin to Thanos’s Snap in Avengers: Infinity War. Whether the fallen will be resurrected in Avengers: Secret Wars remains uncertain, but not seeing Fox’s X-Men again wouldn’t be catastrophic.

This wouldn’t be the first time we've witnessed X-Men fatalities on the big screen. In fact, Stewart’s Professor X has died three times already. However, this might be the last appearance for many actors we've associated with the X-Men. Despite Deadpool's comments, Disney may not have the entire original cast return as X-Men when they reach old age.

While Fox’s X-Men may face demise in Avengers: Doomsday, it appears they will do so in a spectacular fashion.

Unlike Wolverine's glorious exit in Logan, the X-Men's previous endings were less than satisfying, with many being killed off-screen, tarnishing their potential happy ending in Days of Future Past. They also did not receive a proper farewell in the poorly received Dark Phoenix, which was originally intended to lead into a sequel that would continue Jean Grey’s (Sophie Turner) story.

Although the X-Men may perish, it seems they will resurface in some capacity after Secret Wars, which is set to be a “soft reboot” of the MCU. Marvel has already approved a standalone X-Men film directed by Thunderbolts' Jake Schreier. We could see a new cast portraying the X-Men in this renewed MCU, providing the franchise an opportunity to progress and offer something fresh to audiences.
