Determining whether a video is genuine or created by AI has become easier than ever.

Google DeepMind's Gemini has recently gained the capability to identify AI-generated images, and now Google is extending this functionality to AI video content. This means you can inquire with Gemini about whether a video was produced or altered using AI, which is particularly useful given the growing prevalence of AI-generated content on social media and messaging platforms.

According to Google, you can now upload video files directly through the Gemini app or the web and ask the assistant a straightforward question like, “Was this generated using AI?” Gemini will analyze the video’s visuals and audio for Google’s SynthID watermark. If the watermark is found, Gemini will indicate exactly where it appears within the video or audio, providing more detailed information than a simple yes or no answer.

As AI-generated videos become more common on social media, this feature is a valuable addition. Short clips, advertisements, and reposted videos are often circulated without clear identifiers or context, making it difficult to discern what is authentic. A built-in verification tool in Gemini could assist users in quickly assessing questionable videos.

However, it is important to note that this feature, while helpful, does not completely address the broader issue of AI detection on the internet. Since it is dependent exclusively on SynthID watermarks, it can only identify videos created by Google’s AI models or those that implement SynthID watermarking.

If you submit a video produced or altered by models that do not use SynthID, Gemini will not be able to recognize it as AI-generated. Moreover, there is a limit of 100MB or 90 seconds for video uploads, meaning this feature is primarily aimed at social media content rather than full-length videos.

Google states that the feature is available wherever the Gemini app is supported and in all languages. It does not require a subscription, making it an accessible tool for anyone wanting to identify AI-generated content online.
