Motorcycle helmet technologies are constantly being improved: some models promise to eliminate blind spots, others to clean the air, and still others are getting “smarter.” Now Japanese Shoei has introduced the GT-Air 3 Smart — the world’s first helmet with a fully integrated augmented reality (AR) system.

Unlike other helmets with gadgets that can be attached later, this system was developed together with the French company EyeLights and integrated directly into the helmet’s design at the factory. The projector, battery, speakers and microphone are hidden inside the shell.

A special display projects important information directly onto the visor, into the lower part of your field of view. You see the data as if it’s three meters in front of you, so you no longer need to look away at a handlebar-mounted navigator or the dashboard. The system shows speed, route prompts, incoming calls and radar alerts. Developers claim this reduces reaction time by more than 30%. Image: EyeLights

It’s especially convenient that the image remains clear even in bright sunlight thanks to nano‑OLED technology. Just glance slightly up — and all the necessary information is in front of your eyes.

But augmented reality isn’t the only “gimmick” of the new model. The helmet also features a universal intercom system with a supposedly “unlimited” communication range, compatible with devices of any brand. The built-in microphone suppresses noise, and the battery, according to the manufacturer, lasts for 10 hours. Image: EyeLights

At the same time, the GT-Air 3 Smart remains a full protective helmet. It meets DOT and ECE 22.06 standards, and its shell is made using the company’s proprietary multilayer AIM technology. Of course, because of the built-in electronics it will be heavier than the base model, which weighs 1.77 kg, but exact figures have not yet been released. The package also includes a built-in sun visor and a ventilation system that prevents fogging.

Being the first buyer of such a high-tech helmet doesn’t come cheap. Its price is $1,199, nearly twice as expensive as the regular GT-Air 3. There are more affordable “smart” helmets on the market, for example the Sena Phantom for $499, but they can’t boast a built-in HD display with augmented reality. Image: EyeLights

Is such a price justified for a “world’s first”? The question is open. But on the other hand, if you’re selling a sought-after product that competitors don’t have, why not ask a high price for it?
