German startup challenges 'solar-only' competitors with an energy-as-a-service approach.

The German startup Enerkii has introduced an energy-as-a-service model designed to halve power costs for industrial clients while also aiding in decarbonization. The model employs an internal operating system (OS) to determine the optimal solar energy setup for any business within approximately 15 minutes. It then supplies the necessary hardware, including solar panels, battery storage, EV charging, and soon, heat pumps.

Henrik Abel, the co-founder of Enerkii, mentioned that this approach transitions from merely installing or leasing solar panels to providing a comprehensive energy management system. "The time of 'solar-only' energy solutions has come to an end," Abel stated in an interview with TNW. "We are moving into a new phase where the focus is not only on clean power generation but also on intelligent on-site distribution and optimized energy management."

Enerkii's strategy seeks to decrease energy expenses and CO₂ emissions at industrial facilities. Research from Deutsche Bank indicates that around 80% of industrial plants in Germany continue to depend on polluting energy sources. Enerkii aims to reduce this percentage by handling the intricate process of moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems.

The startup addresses this challenge in a unique manner. Unlike many traditional solar companies that sell or lease solar panels to residential users, Enerkii manages the entire energy system, functioning as a mini on-site energy utility. Customers enter into performance-based agreements, paying only for the energy consumed or the savings realized, which eliminates the need for any upfront investment.

"What has been lacking in this sector is an operator that can provide expertise, financing, and operations from a single point of contact," Abel explained. "We are bridging that gap with Enerkii. Our earnings come only when the customer saves, making decarbonization straightforward and providing an immediate competitive edge."

Founded last year, Enerkii reports having signed 18 contracts with unnamed industrial giants in Germany, totaling a capacity of 87 megawatts. The company recently announced it has secured additional funding in a round led by World Fund. The undisclosed amount will support the expansion of Enerkii’s energy-as-a-service model throughout Europe.
