On June 7, Chinese developer Seasun Games announced that its original near-future sci-fi mech combat game, Mecha BREAK, is set to launch globally on July 2. The game will be available simultaneously on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Since its trailer premiered at The Game Awards (TGA) in 2023, Mecha BREAK has garnered significant attention from Chinese gamers.
Why it matters: "Mech" is an abbreviation for "mechanical" and describes a genre that features large, piloted robots often utilized in combat or futuristic scenarios. This title, which has the potential to elevate Chinese sci-fi games to an international audience, is one to watch to see if it can become a new global standard for mech intellectual properties.
Details: Mecha BREAK is currently ranked fifth on Steam's global wishlist. As per the developer, the game has exceeded five million pre-registrations globally.
Mecha BREAK is a team-based online shooter set in a future where pilots operate mechs to fight in contaminated areas resulting from a mysterious mineral. Players can select from five mech classes: Attacker, Defender, Supporter, Brawler, and Sniper to achieve objectives and uncover the truth behind a worldwide disaster.
As part of the launch incentives, 12 mechs in the game will be available without any restrictions. The game’s theme song, UPGRADE(D), is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, recognized for his work on the popular anime Attack on Titan.
During a live gameplay demonstration last night, the game’s producer, Kris, stated that after the game's launch, new environments would be added, including lunar and underwater battlefields. On June 23, a comprehensive overview of the new maps, gameplay modes, bosses, and each mech, along with their respective mechanics, lore, and worldbuilding, will be provided, Kris indicated.
Context: The game entered open testing on February 23, and by February 25, the total number of players across major platforms had surpassed 1.76 million, with peak concurrent users on PC exceeding 300,000, according to the company.
