      Qubits, entanglement, superposition, trapped ions, Schrödinger’s cat. These phrases may sound odd because the realm of quantum mechanics — where entities can simultaneously exist in multiple states — is indeed peculiar.

      Fortunately, a team of students from TU Delft is bringing these intriguing sub-atomic concepts to life at the TNW Conference with an exhibition of abstract artworks. Their initiative, Emergence Delft, merges science and creativity into a thought-provoking journey through quantum reality. A highlight of the exhibition is Coexist — a captivating light installation that portrays the elusive nature of quantum mechanics through color, interaction, and design.

      At its core, Coexist addresses superposition, which is the characteristic of a quantum system to occupy multiple states at once. For instance, a qubit — the quantum equivalent of a classical bit — can represent both 0 and 1 simultaneously. However, this state is temporary. Once an observation is made, the qubit collapses into a singular, definitive state — a phenomenon referred to as the act of measurement.

Surrounding it, large polarization filters are arranged like futuristic windows. As visitors gaze through and rotate these filters, various colors emerge based on their interaction with the light waves, illustrating the principle that the act of observation alters perception, much like in quantum mechanics.
