**The Hurricane (1999)**
Denzel Washington is renowned as one of the greatest actors for a reason. The Hurricane remains one of his most remarkable yet lesser-known performances.
In the film, Washington portrays Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a boxer who aspired to win the middleweight championship but was wrongfully convicted of murder, receiving three consecutive life sentences. The film's portrayal of the demonization of Black men, regardless of their guilt, continues to resonate today.
You can find The Hurricane streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
**Born on the Fourth of July (1989)**
Based on the true story of Ron Kovic, an all-American teenager who enlists in the Vietnam War and later becomes a vocal opponent of it, Born on the Fourth of July embodies a distinctly American narrative. Kovic's journey from patriotic youth to disillusioned critic of his country and the war offers a profound insight into how Vietnam shattered the trust of an entire American generation.
Featuring one of Tom Cruise's most acclaimed performances, Born on the Fourth of July presents a stark and honest depiction of war, accompanied by some striking and distressing footage of the conflict.
You can stream Born on the Fourth of July on Amazon Prime Video.
**Bernie (2011)**
Inspired by a true story, Bernie follows a beloved assistant funeral director in a small Texas town. When he becomes friends with a cantankerous widow whom no one else likes, he ultimately becomes deeply involved in her life and needs.
After her death, for which Bernie is accused of murder, the townspeople rally to his defense, helping us understand how he ended up in this predicament. Supported by one of Jack Black’s finest performances, Bernie is darkly comedic from beginning to end.
You can watch Bernie on Amazon Prime Video.
